Deer hunting is an activity in which deer are pursued and killed. It began as early as 7000 BC. There are different varieties of deer, which are hunted. People choose the variety they want and go for it. Hunters may stalk the deer by following the signs and trails of the deer, or waiting where deer are likely to travel or by flushing deer towards a line of hunters. They may even use dogs to drive the deer out of their bedding place to a place where the a hunter can get a shot.

Deer rubs; scrapes, droppings, and tracks are the most common signs which hunters use to find deer. Scrapes are places where deer scratch the ground and urinate below low hanging branches to mark the territory and attract female deer. The tracks reveal the size, age, and the species of the deer. The deer generally move just before sunrise or just after sunset to have their food. Deer may also leave their bedding places if there is a storm or heavy precipitation. These situations make the deer nervous and will most likely make the deer want to run away. Even the moon may affect the deer movement.

If you decide to go out hunting, make sure your hunting equipment is in good shape. Many different types of hunting equipment are allowed and used for deer hunting. These include bows, crossbows, rifles, shotguns, pistols, and muzzleloaders. There are rules and regulations controlling the size of hunting equipment and arms. Rifles under .22 calibers are often prohibited. Firearms used can be 10, 12, or 20 gauge shotguns. You have to practice shooting or archery before you actually hunt. You have to prepare yourself well the day before you go hunting. Your hunting equipment has to be in good condition and you have to have adequate practice how to use it.

Many hunters use GPS units while hunting to keep track. Proper hunting clothing is orange colored clothing so you stand out among the green foliage. Otherwise, other hunters may aim at you and shoot you by mistake.

Hunting equipment should also include a knife, as it is very useful for any occasion. Hunters use deer stands or tree stands to have a proper view of the animals. These deer stands are at an elevated position so it is easy to have a good view of the surroundings. You have to be careful you donít fall off in excitement. You have to start preparing for the hunting trip by first marking the area where you want to hunt. You can buy good maps and topographic quadrangles of the area. Practice with the weapon your going to bring with you. Make sure you are accurate with using that weapon. Again, donít forget to wear orange. When you reach the place where you want to hunt, be extremely quiet because even the movement of paper will distract the deer and they will run away.

There is a lot of sitting and waiting before you get your prey. Use baking soda to remove all smell or perfume from your clothes and your hunting equipment, as deer are very sensitive about smell though they are colorblind. Follow all these rules and you will enjoy your hunt.
