Whitworth, Hornady Custom 240grn JHP. Factory load. Two shots, one in the tree and one on the ground. The brush was really thick in the canyon bottom where we were at. Notice the brush in the back-round. The whole canyon was like this. Second shot probably was not needed, but considering the terrain and vegetation it seemed prudent at the time.

Outstanding! I made 4 trips to New Mexico after black bear, 2 down around Magdelana and to up by Tres Piedras; spot and stalk.

Russell, SW of Tres Piedras is the small village of El Rito. Bear came from canyon area NE of El Rito. Good area for color phase bear. Canyons are rough. Also deep with small creeks in bottoms with plenty of food sources. Been down Magdelana way, prefer The area between Tres Piedras and El Rito. Can't speak to spot and stalk. I love the hounds. Any luck on any of the hunts?

Those canyons are rough going! Spotted bear on two separate occasions but by the time I worked down wind and then up to 'em, they were gone. Tried calling, but never saw 'em again.
