If you did not reload which caliber would you prefer 30-30 or 7x30 waters for deer. I have old style contender and was looking for something longer shooting than 44 mag. Thanks

Treeman, i have never shot a 30-30 in a T/C but i sure do love my 7-30 Waters and I think it is a better overall than the 30/30 in the shorter barrels. Look up in the Hornady load books and you will see the difference. The load book shows that you can push a 7mm 120 gr bullet to 2500fps and a 139gr bullet to 2350fps and the 30cal 130gr to 2000fps and the 150gr to 1900fps in 14in barrels. I know that the gr weight of the bullets is off by 10grs but if also compare the bc of the 7mm to the 30cal you will see the 7mm has a big advantage. Hope this has helped a little bit.

I have both and reload for both my 7x30 is more accurate than my 30-30 but ammo for the 30-30 is alot easier to get than ammo for the 7x30 and the only bullet you can get for factory 7x30 is 120 gr flatnose from federal

Nice piece you have there. How does it shoot? Done any hunting with it yet?

John, the 30/30 shot terrific. Inside 2" at 100 yds. unfortunately, I sold it not long ago. Wish I hadn't. The only hunt I took it on was for hogs and took a decent boar. Pic is at below link.
