Description: Each year I try to use a different gun, and this year's choice was a G-2 Contender in .358 JDJ sporting a 2 x 7 Burris in four Weaver Grand Slam rings. Just as I touched off the shot, the gun slipped slightly on my improvised rest. I heard the satisfying "whomp" of a solid hit but watched in stunned disbelief as the deer exited the field at warp speed and headed toward the creek bottom. Sickened by my poorly placed shot, I knew that If the buck made it across the creek, and up the ridge on the other side, there was nothing but miles of timber between him and the Trinity River. I vowed not to let that happen. We followed the deer onto an island covered with willow thickets. I waded out to the island, and slowly crawled through the tangle of willows. When I reached the end of the island, I spotted a deer standing on a gravel bar in the middle of the creek. I eased the .358 JDJ through an opening in the willow screen, and touched off one of the big 225 grain Noslers. Thus ending the deer?s short-lived escape. Old Scissorhorns scored 108" SCI, which placed him at #13 in the SCI Record Book listings of Columbia Blacktails taken with a handgun at the time of kill.
