I have a colt saa new frontier in 45 colt and was wanting to use it for whitetail deer and wild pig hunting.....close shots (under 50yds). I've read these frames can't handle the higher pressures like a ruger or freedom arms. Any suggestions on factory or handloads? I saw a few standard pressure loads from buffalo bore that looked liked they'd work (225gr barnes at 1000fps and a 255gr keith style bullet at 950fps).
Thanks

RON K: WHAT BARREL LENGTH ON THAT NF? ARE YOU SET UP FOR RELOADING, AND RELOADING FOR THE 45 COLT? DEPENDING ON THE BARREL LENGTH, IN COLT SAA REVOLVERS, 1,000fps WITH 250-260gr BULLETS IS DOABLE. PAGE 120 OF DAVE SCOVILL'S BOOK "COLT'S SINGLE ACTION ARMY - LOADING AND SHOOTING THE PEACEMAKER" HAS A GOOD CHART ON LOADS, AND "TAFFIN TESTS" ON THE INTERNET HAS GOOD INFO ON SAA LOADS. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT COLT's SAA AND THE 45 COLT, I RECOMMEND YOU GET SCOVILL's BOOK. AT 1,000fps AND UNDER I WOULD ONLY RELY ON GOOD CAST BULLETS, AND PROBABLY NONE THAT ARE HP'ed. FOR FACTORY AMMO FOR YOUR NF 45 COLT, BUFFALO BORE MAY BE YOUR BEST BET.

For my "Light" load out of my Freedom Arms model 97 I use Underwood standard pressure 255gr Keith Style at 1000fps. This is supposed to be a standard pressure load. If you have the 7.5 inch barrel your velocity might be a little higher. They also make a 250gr XTP at 960 fps. This is if you are not reloading. If reloading the sky's the limit.

I have also found the Thornily Relative Stopping Power calculator on Beartooth Bullets ballistics page to be very reassuring in calculating the effectiveness of the big slug at slower speeds as opposed to for frequently used kinetic energy calculations. That and the shared experience of others makes me very confident with the 255gr hard cast at 1000fps.

DavT: I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE THORNILY FORMULA SO I LOOKED IT UP, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO DO THE MATH ON IT BUT IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE A FORMULA SIMILAR TO THE TAYLOR TKO FORMULA, WHICH IS THE ONE I HAVE ALWAYS PREFERRED WHEN EVALUATING REVOLVER LOADS.

It's a 4 3/4" barrel. I'm setup for hand loading just never loaded pistol cartridges.
Thanks for the responses.

Is the Underwood 255gr hard cast non-expanding? I know "hard casts" are made to different hardness levels.

RON K: AT 1,000fps FORGET EXPANSION, YOU DO NOT NEED IT WITH A 45 CALIBER SWC. SIXSHOT MAY HAVE A RECIPE FOR A HP THAT WILL EXPAND AT 1,000fps BUT YOU ARE USING A 4 3/4 INCH BARRELED REVOLVER, GO WITH A GOOD BULLET THAT WILL HIT HARD, MAINTAIN ITS INTEGRITY AND PENETRATE STRAIGHT.

The website for Underwood lists the hardness at 21 BHN. It is also gas checked.

RON K: SIXSHOT HAS HAD SOME EXCELLENT CAST BULLET TOPICS, MOST RECENTLY ON POWDER COATED BULLETS. I WILL RESURRECT 2 CAST BULLET TOPICS WITH A NEW POST SO YOU WILL HAVE SOME "HOME WORK", ONE IS "CAST BULLETS: HOW FAST IS TOO FAST" AND "HARDCAST BULLET INTEGRITY".
