I just picked up a BFR in 500 JRH and am having some issues with the action... or I?m just dumb. I got it used and it was caked in oil powder and gunk. So naturally I pulled the pin removed the cylinder and cleaned it for an hour or so today. Now that it?s clean the pawl is not hitting to rotate the cylinder. I don?t know what to do but I?m loosing my cool thinking I got a bum gun. Did I mess something up by removing the cylinder for cleaning? NOTE it was rotating fine before the cleaning so I feel I?m doing something wrong.

Also what dies would you get for loading the 500 JRH

Perhaps some grime moved down into the track that the pawl follows. I assume that you have closed the loading gate when function testing. Removing the cylinder and pin AND replacing them correctly should not affect the function of the pawl.

RCBS makes 500 Special dies, which will work great for the 500 JRH. Have for me! Midway USA Part#s: Product #: 888214 RCBS #: 23812 UPC #: 076683238122

I have been messing with it all evening now. I have rotation when cocking the hammer (most of the time) when I let the hammer down slowly while holding the trigger it seems like this is when my problem occurs. Also if the hammer is cocked with any pressure on the trigger. I have just been trying anything and everything to repeat the issue. I guess I will end up having a gunsmith take a look at it. I really want to be able to trust this gun if ever need for a serious situation with a mad critter.

Make sure your base pin is in correctly.

Base pin may not be fully seated so that the base pin screw can engage the indent. I use the RCBS Dies (RCBS #: 23812) with a separate crimp die (RCBS #: 23838). Since they can be used for both the 500 S&W Magnum and 500 S&W Special, they work just great for the 500 JRH. Good luck on the new gun.

It is a random issue that does not seem to follow a pattern. It is mainly occurring when manipulating the hammer with my finger on the trigger to safely decock the hammer. Again it is not consistent so it does not happen every time. Once it gets to the point where the pawl is not engaging the cylinder if I cock the hammer and dry fire (on snap caps) a couple times the pawl then starts to engage the cylinder again.

Just got in touch with Magnum Research. Looks like I will be sending it into them and let them decide what is wrong. Thanks for the help here
