So now that deer season is closed...it's time for a little payback. I've dealt with tipped over and destroyed feeders, rooted up food plots, and HUNDREDS of dollars of corn consumed in short order.
So yesterday afternoon I climb into my stand, slipping in right at sundown. The bright moon and cloudless sky helped to illuminate the oak flat that I had monitored for most of the deer season, and the Leupold CQT picked up an amazing amount of light, despite the small objective. I turned down the reticle brightness to not obscure the animals, and sat back and let the river swamp quiet down.
The first animals in were the deer, clearly visible in the bright moonlight - the wind was not in my favor, but knowing my quarry and target, Scent-Away and HS Specialties must have been happy with my usage. The deer slipped in and feed throughout the flat, nervously checking and eating, on constant alert...
And then I heard the splashing through the slough to my West...the deer on high-ready as a new stranger approached. The telltale trot-trot-trot, pause, trot-trot-trot, pause confirmed the identity before visual confirmation was made. The deer scattered - and the boar broke into the opening. I wait for the hog to pause from his manic feeding/deer chasing activity, and then concentrate solely on the food. Power muffs in place, I ease the safety off, line up the glowing dot just behind the ear, and send a 53 gr Corbon on the way. The first sound after report is the beautiful sound that only a hog hunter can appreciate! The Surefire is switched on - the shot was true, incapacitating the front end of the hog, and a quick followup puts the 175# boar at ease. Don't worry guys - the handguns will get some nighttime play before too long, but the "hog hammers" need to get some action first. Got a new Christmas Grendel that needs some love soon too!
Sig 556 with Leupold MK4 CQT - Surefire X300 weapon light - Corbon 53 gr DPX; just received remote-control LED lights, and ordered Elusive Wildlife weapon lights that can mount on the short guns soon after arrival. On a mission before turkey season arrives - looks like sleep may be optional!

Nice work!! You will like the Kill Light from Elusive Wildlife! I have used them a couple of times with great success. Did you go with the red or the green light? The first one I used was red, but now I am using green lights.

Thanks guys! Whit - I went with the green lights as well. I went to the Elusive products based on the write up you had done at Hog Heaven. I''ve used red filters on spotlights previously, and while they work great for lighter colored predators ('yotes, foxes), the red doesn't do as well on dark animals.
I'll admit, it's kinda weird sitting in the stand in the night - but pretty cool getting the drop on these nocturnal critters.

Excellent! Glad to hear someone reads my drivel -- LOL!! The last hog I shot I used the XLR250 (the bigger light). That said, that thing lights up the night! But so does the smaller light. Looking forward to hearing and seeing the results!

That has to be a blast. I have yet to hunt in the dark.
