I have decided to do what I should have done years ago, join an organization that protects our rights to hunt and to own firearms. It seems as though there are several solid options, my question is whether or not any of them is more given to protect our sport of handgun hunting. Any thoughts?

The NRA is the largest and most powerfull of them all. I've seen them slandered by smaller organizations accusing them of caving but that was a ploy for financial gain of the smaller outfits. The NRA isn't perfect but they are the strongest and actually have lobbyist and attorneys on staff. There are non that specifically get into handgun hunting but again since handguns in general are the most attacked weapon in general the NRA is again on top and they do also work for hunters rights. As far as hunter only organizations there is the RMEF and SCI but very little of the money will stay in your own state so your better off joining a state based hunters organization. I belong to the RMEF as well as my state hunters association because they do alot for elk hunting. I like SCI but they are lower on my list mainly because it seems they are too involved outside the US to be able to put the necessary effort in this country. I have belonged to SCI off and on but I want to know my money is being spent in the United States and not overseas.

Yep, the NRA is about the best your 25 or 35 bucks can do for our rights and you get a great magazine to boot. Gun Owners of America (GOA) is another great organization. They will notify you of any proposed legislation that you should write your rep's about. Nearly every state has its hunter organizations, here in MN it is the Minnesota Deer Hunters Assn that gets my attention, although they do not cater specifically to handguns. HHI is a handgun organization, but notsomuch a political one.

N.R.A. is like our legal system; there are some parts I don't like but it's still the best in the world. Our gun rights are only as strong as WE are.

You also might check on prices, here a while back I got a letter saying i could get life memberships for friends and family for 300 or 350 but I had already bought them for my wife and daughter so I tossed the letter. I think they are on a recruitment drive with the upcoming election so you may get a better deal than normal.

Would I check with a family member who is a member?

wouldn't hurt to check and see if they have received special deals or even call the NRA and tell them you had heard about the special deal and ask if there are any specials as you would like to join. Like I said they are on a big recruitment push with the upcoming elections so they may just give you the deal. I wish I hadn't thrown my stuff away or I could have done it for you. I'll double check and see if I might still have the stuff and let you know.
