I have an encore pistol in 25-06 and im looking to get a 475 linebaugh barrel for it i was thinking a 10 inch barrel. I want a shorter barrel than my 15in 25-06 so it can fit into my pack easier also i want to be able to shoot a caliber that wont cause my ears to bleed. I was wandering if the 475 is easier on the ears than a true rifle cartridge. I was also wondering if a 475 cast bullet loaded with trail boss powder goin around 900 fps would be good for deer out 50 yards or so i hunt in dense woods so i wont have to shoot much further than that.

The 475 is easier on the ears but it's still not pleasant. If your only wanting to run low power loads I might suggest going with a 480 Ruger. There is a light load for the 425gr hard cast with 15gr of HS6 but it still runs about 1100fps. Cartridges with large capacity don't always do well when downloaded so again the smaller capacity of the 480 may be a better choice.

They're all loud man, and it seems the bigger the hole tha less the blow, but the 475 Liney makes some noise. Hell, I popped a roughy in the bean during deer season with my 45LC at 7 yards in heavy cover and it made me take notice. I love the 480 and agree, it would be a great choice. Only bad is that bullets cost double what 45's do.

I was looking at my hodgon reloading manual and they have a 475 trail boss load of 8.5 grains pushing a 370 gr cpb lfp at 824fps and a titegroup load of 8.0 pushing the same bullet at 1130fps that was the data i was looking at i try to always use professionally published load data. I bought the 25-06 on a whim i can shoot it well but i have to put hearing protection on before i shoot the deer so id like to avoid that all together and just cock and shoot

It still makes noise but it is much easier on the ears than a rifle cartridge but I still wear plugs. A 420 at just over 1000 fps with 14 grains of hs6 is very mild and will hammer a deer.

Yea im not gonna go shootin it alot with out hearing pretection but when im hunting i like to keep my ears open and sometimes you dont have time to put them in so i figure if i can get it somewhere around 44 mag noise levels i can tolerate it long enough to pop a deer.

I know you can slow it down with certain powders but I guess what I was getting at is the fuller the case the more consistant and accurate the loads are as a general rule not to mention less chance of a double charge.

I will not even think about shooting anything larger than a .22 without ear protection. I find that I can still hear well enough with foam ear plugs when hunting and they do a good job of reducing the loud sounds. I have tried the game ears, but haven't found them very satisfactory.

The most comfortable foam plugs are the purple ones in the pharmacy dept at Wal-mart. They are also easier to install because when you compress them they don't expand as rapidly as some of the others.

Any handgun has the potiential to cause permanent damage. I try to at least have the option of putting something on real quick. I have also tried the power muffs and have found them to work well when turned way down to normal hearing levels.

I wear the pro ears electronic muffs. They are expensive but the best ones I've tried. I can tell direction with them on and the wind doesn't affect them too badly like some others I've tried.
