Anyone have a recommendation for an after market crimp die to use on factory .454 Casull loads? In shooting my Ruger Alaskan with a full cylinder, the 3rd thru 5th rounds causes the bullets to back out of the cases enough to tie up the cylinder. Doesn't matter who loads them (Hornady, Magtech, etc.). I haven't used Buffalo Bullets yet, but have some on order. I hardly think a three shot revolver is a good backup bear gun.

Lee makes a factory crimp die that may be of help, that is kind of strange that your having jumping issues with all the different brands.

First thing I'd do is call the makers of your ammo and say WTF is going on. If you have jumping with the BB stuff I will be surprised. You could try the Lee die, but any crimp die could chase them. A heavy crimp can bring pressure up a tad so......

I've had similar problems with short barrels and heavy loads in 454's. I would recommend a Redding Profile Crimp die but you may still have the same problem, factory crimps are usually pretty good.

Thanks, guys. I suspect that the short barrel (2.5 inches) reduces the mass of the revolver, causing the heavier bullets to stay put while everything else moves in recoil. I'd bet that complaining to Hornady and Magtech won't produce any immediate answer. I'm partial to Redding products (no knock on Lee; my first reloader was a Lee Loader for .44 mag back in 1973). When I start reloading for this caliber, I'm going to cast straight linotype in a Lyman 4-gang Keith-type mould and crimp the crap out of them...

Actually Redding and Hornady are my two favorite dies I just brought up the Lee since they have the single purpose crimp die. I had 45-70 BFR that I could not load jacketed bullets for. Because of the thin brass and massive recoil of full house loads they would jump after the first couple shots so I had to go to hard cast with the crimp groove. They would still try to move a little but as long as I fired all the rounds in order I was ok.
