Unable to wait any longer for a .460 I ordered from S&W in March, I went back to my fist idea and got a BFR in .45-70 w/ 10" barrel. The fit and finish was on par with all the good things I have read. (thanks guys). I picked up 2 boxes of ammo, winchester superX 300g and Hornady 325g, and headed for the range.
The gun was much more balanced in my hand than I thought it would be with the long cylinder and barrel, not front heavy at all! Off the rest, with the winchester ammo, this gun is an absolute pleasure to shoot!I would say it kicks less than my SBHH with 240g jacketed hornady ammo. The Hornady was, well...different! lol Let's just say I had to tighten the shoe laces to deal with it. lol And, I have probably found the limit of what I like to handle as far as recoil. After a few rounds, I went back to the super X and finished off the box for fun.
Accuracy was great as well. At least for me. As I shoot it more, I suspect I'll get better groups, but I am happy with this purchase!

Congrat's! The 45/70 is one that you would definitely benefit from hand loading. You can run from 45LC levels clear up to nuclear.

Had one great revolver I hade good luck reloading it. I also change the grips helped alot on the recoil. Blackhawk grips work if you didnt know.

Shot a doe at 50 yds. I dont think a truck could have hit it any harder.

Hornady does have some ump behind them.

You really need to cast for the gun to save money and see what it can do. I found SR4759 powder is best and I shoot from 300 gr to 420 gr bullets/boolits.
I use a LP mag primer in mine and have clanged steel to 500 meters (547 yards.) I have never shot a 45-70 rifle that will match it.
This is the line of boolits I shoot and common 50 yard groups.

Thanks guys.
s4s4u- everyone asks if I can shoot 45LC in it but I didn't think I could. Not that I would anyway, the super X is pretty mild.
bfr-I have a houge grip for a super blackhawk but had some trouble fitting it, I thought a longer screw would get it. I'll try it again but the stock grip isn't bad.
430- I'm saving brass and a friend of mine has a press. I'll be giving it a shot soon.

Wizzard, that should be fun!

I believe that s4s4u was trying to say that if you handload, you can load the 45-70 from 45 colt PERFORMANCE LEVELS (velocities) up to full house high performance loads. The 45 colt will not chamber in a 45-70 firearm

Wizard, I know you know this already, but a 45 colt, 454, 460, are all .452 The 45/70, 450 marlin, and the like are .458 . Bullets from one can't be used in the other because they are not the same. I know you prob. already know this, I'm just clearing it up for any newbies.

I had the 7.5" BFR in 45-70 and if you do your own loading you'll find if you load hot the 45-70 brass is too thin to hold a good crimp on jacketed bullets although if you go to nickel plated brass it will help. I loaded mine to the max and could never get a crimp to hold on the jacketed at top end. I ended up settling on a hard cast load of a 440gr running at 1650fps. Recoil on that was very stout, if your like me and prefer jacketed bullets and you want to be able to push it you can eventually get a 450 Marlin cylinder for it from Magnum and the brass is much heavier as it's basicly just a shortened 458 Win. As far as accuracy went mine would shoot right around 2"-3" off the bags with a 2X Leupold and a Bushnell Trophy red dot. The 450 cyl is also a good option if you don't reload and want a larger option of more powerfull factory loadings. You'll have to go custom ammo like Grizzly to get the most out of the 45-70 in a pre rolled package.

You picked a great gun, make sure and post pics when you hammer something with it.
