there are so many of them it mostly depends on price range. I've seen some in my catalogs in the past I could have sold for under 400.00 but I also hadn't heard of them before and then of course you can get up to several grand. I have heard good things about the new Ruger 1911 as well as the S&W and with them you know what kind of company your dealing with. If you want to go up then you can look at Springfield Armory, Kimber ETC and of course Les Baer but there are literally dozens of companies making and/or modifying 1911's, it's the most popular handgun on the planet.

One of my customers recently had me order him in a Taurus PT1911. I hadn't seen one in the flesh before, and I was suitably impressed. Don't know how its worked out for him, but haven't heard any complaints.

I bought a used Colt Gov't model Bullseye wadcutter gun from a well known pistolsmith & shooter years ago that's unbelievably accurate for 1100 bucks that will shoot circles around my $1800 Kimber Super Match.

Just a thought.

PS, Excellent semi- custom at reasonable prices.

I am a firm believer you get what you pay for in the 1911 market. I have purchased several over the years and would suggest for an entry level such guns as the newer Ruger and Remington, Springfield and some of the older Kimbers. Higher end guns like STI, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Les Baer and Wilson are a little bit more expensive than the entry level but are very much worth the money.

The 1911 platform is a bit finicky. Because of such tight tolerances, they require thorough cleaning on a very regular basis. Definately a high maintenance gun.

There is an awesome 1911 forum on Glocktalk.com. One of the member is very knowledgable about 1911's has put together a buyers guide.

9mm is becoming very popular with the 1911 manufactures which is less recoil than the 45 and less expensive to shoot. 10 mm is also offered.

One thing I've learned about 1911's is that loose-guns-run.

Tight guns are nice and sexy, but often high maintenance.

The RIA Tactical is $425 well spent. I am not a fan of Taurus, but their 1911 is a good gun that you can get into for $500+ depending on frills. The STI Spartan is a bargain at $600 or so. For another couple hundred you can get into an SA Loaded, but you don't have to drop a grand to get a good 1911.

I have a Colt Gold Cup .45 and a custom Wilson Combat .45. My Taurus PT1911 is very accurate and functions anything that I try. It is almost as accurate as the Gold Cup. An adjustable rear sight can always be added.

there is one more option depending on your mechanical abilities. Brownells and Midway as well as many others sell everything you need to build a 1911 from the ground up. I built a frankenstein of one for myself and it has a combination of modern, Vietnam surplus, and WWII surplus parts and it's a shooter other than I need to work the loading ramp so it will take hollow points and I've decided to do away with the staked front sight and go to a dovetailed but that will be if and when I have the time.
