External ballistics: The transonic problem

 Quote:
The erratic and sudden CP shift and (temporary) decrease of dynamic stability can cause significant dispersion (and hence significant accuracy decay), even if the bullet's flight becomes well behaved again when it enters the subsonic region. This makes accurately predicting the ballistic behaviour of bullets in the transonic region very difficult.

I seem to need to link to that page every time I come here. Handguns with a muzzle velocity near the transonic speeds, needs care to remain below it.

Physics, its the law you can't violate.

what about that video you have a link to? that bullet must be passing through that barrier? at the practical ranges the big bores are shot at I do not see this being a issue. the guys shooting BR have had trouble if the round goes subsonic before the target but again straight wall pistol rounds at normal hunting ranges comon

So you're saying it is physically impossible for my Bisley 45LC, 250XTP @ 1250FPS, to shoot the 1" groups it does?

Psst, don't tell my gun......;-)

Yes sir Rod, or my 22LR, or 221 with Gopher Loads, or...

I can see the application of the point, but why havent I had any problems with it? My 221 is shooing a 45gr leaving the barrel at 1200? It is shooting awesome out to 100 without any problems, should I be worried???

Honistly 686, I think you are trying to honestly help, but I don't know of anybody on this forum ever discussing this issue or having a problem. In fact, our usual debate is that we are running bullets at 1400 fps and need to slow them down to 1200ish. LOL

Have you talked to Linebaugh about this, I do bleave he really likes running projectiles at 1200 fps... ...

Not to mention all of Keith’s loads... IMHO, Keith practiced quite a bit with his revolvers at extended distances out to 600 yards. I guess that big ol hunk of lead did all right leaving the barrel at 1200fps...

I think this is a case of theoretic vs practical. The accuracy decay caused by dropping through the speed of sound is insignificant compared to other accuracy issues with handguns, so as to be practically of zero concern in the real world of handgun hunting.
