I have a 44 magnum SRH and will mount a Jpoint dot or Leupold on it after hunting season for next year. I prefer the iron sights up close but want the assurance of optics at ranges beyond 30 yards. I think one of these dot sights will be the happy medium. I have two questions. What mount options do I have for the super redhawk? The only mount I have seen is a Weigand base but have seen smaller bases on this site for other guns. Also what is your opinion of these dot sights for hunting deer.
An Ultradot will fit on the super redhawk. Here are my 454 and 480:
Another option is to mount a Burris Fast Fire II on the gun. Burris makes a FastFire II mount that works on the Super Redhawk. Here is the Fast Fire II on my S&W 44 Mag:
I bought my Super Redhawk Fastfire II mount at Optics Planet
Thanks Darrell H. This is why this site is the best. I asked a question and in minutes I have an answer. I did not want the big base and as usual this site has save me some trial and error and money. Thanks again.
since you have and used both the tube type and holographic sight which do you prefer.
Hmmm...that's a tough one. I can't help but believe that the "tube" style would be tougher and more weather resistant but I've yet to have any trouble with either of my 3- FastFire II's or my Jpoint. You have more control over the intensity of the dot with the tube style sights. The reflex sights are smaller. I'm not much help I'm afraid!
As above, JPoint already make a mount for Ruger revolvers. I think they may have cosmetically altered the design at some time. Mine is fitted to a SRH in .454 and has shown no problems in handling recoil. I'm that happy with it that I won't return to iron sights on any of my handguns.
Does the J-point SRH mount require the removal of the rear sight?
One thing that I really like about the Burris Fastfire II mount is that you can keep your iron sights sighted in while mounting the red dot in the machined-in scope mounts in the frame.
