Hey guys. I have a question. Looking for a good handgun for hunting elk. Thinking about a ruger blackhawk hunter in 44 mag with a four power scope . Like a Leupold X4 handgun scope or burris with the ballistic plex

You will probably be getting a lot of different opinions here. I will speak only from experience.

For revolvers, I killed a mature 6X6 bull with a FA .454 Casull, FA Factory 260 gr. JFP, wearing a Bausch & Lomb 2X6 scope, on 2 power as that is how I carry it. I also killed a 5X6 bull with an iron sighted FA, same caliber and load.

My third revolver bull was this year with a Custom .475 L, red dot sight, 400 gr. Hornady XTP. On none of these shots would I have preferred or even felt comfortable with a .44 magnum; I simply like the bigger calibers for the big bulls.

I am not saying the .44 magnum with the right bullets won't work; it certainly will, just giving my personal experiences and how I felt with each one.

As far as scopes go, I would go with your Leupold; 4 power is OK if you are used to it. I have killed several bulls with my .375 JDJ Contender wearing a 4X Leupy.

At what distance do you intend to shoot an elk wtih your 44? I wouldn't push much further than 75 yards and I'm not sure the BP will give you much advantage. You may be better served with an Ultra-Dot rather than a scope. JMHO.

Yes I load a 305 gr cast flatnose bullets and found some HSM 305 GR FLATNOSE CAST. Also have a contender 7-30 waters shooting 140 Nosler partitions.

A 300ish grain .44 bullet pushed around 1300fps will have a point blank range right around 120 yards.

IMHO, a ballistic plex type reticle will give you no advantage. Anything inside 120 yards, shoot point of aim.

Beyond 120 yards, you would be better served with a different caliber/gun.

out to around 100yds you'd do well with any of the big bores in 454 and above although the 44 and 45 can get the job done. The extra horsepower does help when dealing with animals the size and toughness of elk. If you want more reach then I'd look at the Encore platform in something around 30-06 or bigger, I wouldn't feel to awfully undergunned with the 270 either. I use an 06 barrel I rechambered to 300Win mag and threw together a week before the season last year and it has a 5x6 at 253yds under it's belt now. I struck out during bull season but I'm supposed to take part in a Ag damage hunt for cows only and I'll be packing either my 454 with either a Weaver 2x or a Millet red dot, or I'll take my Encore in 458Win mag and I don't feel overgunned with that going up against Roosevelt cows where a big lead cow can go over 1000lbs.

Could you explain the logic behind the mpbr you referenced. Not doubting, just want to learn.
Thanks!

What are you looking to find out......the complete idea of max point blank range or why he picked the distances referenced?
