I am using my FA .454 Casull 7 1/2" with mechanical sights for deer and boar hunting, distances up to 100m/110 yds. I'm considering to mount JP Enterprises 4 MOA red dot on top of it but my concern is that it might cost me some accuracy. Does anybody have experience with red dot vs. open sights on handgun accuracy-wise? (I still have excellent eyesight and no problem with mechanicals)
I would highly appreciate any shared experience
Igor

Well there are surely many people here with more experience than me but if I could see the irons more clearly I would use them just because thats the way I would like to do it,but you will not loose any accuracy with a red dot,I use the 30mm ultra dot with very good results, there is a competion model that you can choose to use a 2 moa dot with also I believe.

red dots are fast to get on target ,you can keep both eyes open following the game through brush, you don't have to blurr out the target/sights like you do when using open sights.

You can't go wrong with an UltraDot.

Welcome Igor, you sure are a long throw from here. As long as the size of the dot is smaller than your target you should not lose any accuracy. I have a rig just as you mentioned, 'cept cheaper:

Igor,

I just mounted my first reflex-type sight on my 500 WE, the Leupold DeltaPoint (3.5 MOA dot) So far, I have been very impressed with the optic, ability to shoot accurately, and decreased time to target acquisition. One whitetail doe down, and hopefully more to come!

The only problem I ever had with dots was evening shooting. In fading light the dot will "red out" the game and make it hard to see the game. I had so much trouble with this on crop damage deer in cornfields close to dark that I gave up on the dots, Day time no problem. Evening big problems.

I have a JPoint (8 MOA dot) on my Ruger 454 and also on a Glock34.

I would not go back to using iron sights. However sights are very much an individual thing. I find the red dot is more usably accurate than iron sights. I also find that I can use them when there isn't enough light to pick up iron sights. However, as you can see from the comment above, this isn't the universal experience.

The only thing you can do is try them and see if they work for you.

ps If you've done a lot of shooting with iron sights, you will probably have to spend a while getting used to the red dots. They work the opposite way ie focus on the target not the sight.
