But man do I hate shotguns!! Aarrgghhh!!!! Nothing against those of you that like them...just not my flavor. I like to put on clean hole through my intended target, not pepper it with BB's. I went hunting yesterday and called in five...YES five Toms in one group...pure luck...I'm just getting into spring bird hunting. They came to around fifty yards and would not come any closer...I think they were too occupied with each other and locked in a clear strut area to worry about my trying to be a lil' ole hen. Anyhooo...I was just sitting there watching and thinking the entire time "iffin I just had my 10" .22 Hornet this would all be over" but allas we are shotgun/archery only in spring turkey season.
Then all of a sudden a hen from my right side must have seen something she did not like and ran to the Toms and they all left the area. In all there were seven Toms gobbling but only five came into the clearing...one was staying on the ridge behind me and the other was far off to my right gobbling.
Well...maybe my dislike of shotguns sstems from the fact that I've never owned a good one. I have a Mosberg 500 that I borrow from Dad and limit my shots to under thirty yards. Guess I need to outfit it with a turkey choke tube and do some better patterning. OR...buy an Encore and get the turkey barrel for it!
Off again to chase those bearded buggers.......

Dan,
We're allowed to use shotguns, centerfire, and rimfire here in Florida in most of our areas. I'm the world's worst turkey hunter but I sure love to give the coyotes grief during turkey season...

Hawkeye, with a stick-bow no less. That is truly a handgunning feat in archery talk. I have numerous shotguns and bows to hunt turkeys with, but I don't care what it's with, I just want to hunt and shoot something - even just targets. To be fair, there's not as much enjoyment of being able to bag a bird at 50, 60, 0r 3v3n 70 yards with a 10ga magnum, but I try anyway. The real thrill is getting them in close. To take one with a bow is an extradinoray accomplishment beings they are as wary as they are. Congtrats on that 20lb bad boy! Gerry.

Hawkeye...that's awesome! I took a jake a few years back with my HoytUSA AlphaTec during the fall season. Head shot him at 23 yards...needless to say he dropped in his tracks! Since I am fairly new to spring hunting I'm using a shotgun...just to get the hang of calling and trying to make it as simple as possible.
I also take my grandfather with me and do all the calling for him...which is another reason I take the shotgun...in case I need to make a fast follow-up shot.
Oohhhh...I've already remedied the "gun problem". Stopped by one of my usual gunshop stops when heading to work today and he had a nice Mossberg 835 UltiMag in the used rack so I snagged it. I guess since I'll be doing this for an entire month for the year I may as well have a decent shotgun.

Yepper on the 3.5's! Got the Federal Premium loaded w/ #5's and prepared myself to get beat up... ...man was I right. Though not totally unbearable it is a stiff kicker. Checked it on target at 25 yards and the pattern was pretty tight then went to 40yds and it's still pretty good. So I set two clay birds on the berm at 50 yards and fired two shots...each bird was obliterated! I guess now that I have a decent shotgun it won't be so bad hunting with one... ...but I still prefer one clean hole from a single shot OR single action!!
