I have stock rubber grips on my Colt Anaconda. I shoot Combat style because I was trained that way. I find the kick of the 44 mag painfull on the web of my hand and wrist. This is my first large bore HG so Im looking for advice on this problem, and can only come up with a two options.
1. Try and find better grips
2. Get it ported
Ive been shooting this style and still use it with the military, so changing styles really isnt an option right now
Any advise will help

A grip that fits your hand will help alot.

Do you handload? Reduced loads will help. If not what about cowboy action loads? I know Cabela's has a cowboy action laod for the 44 mag.

I am getting back in to Hand Loading. Did it when I was younger on borrowed equipment and am setting up my own now so soon will be loading. Are you talking about a cowboy load and would you hunt with these?

They are a bit underpowered for hunting, are intended for quick shooting competition. A 44 Special loading will work at reasonable range, depending on the size of critter. A 240 @ 1,000 fps is not uncomfortable, but I prefer to move it along in the 1,300+ range for effect.

Definately try different grips. The proper size will do wonders for you. Load lighter bullets at 12-1300 fps range and it is still a viable hunting round. The XTP's in 185 or 200 will reduce some recoil and will still give good penetration. I have killed several deer with my 44 RSBH with 185 xtps at 1100 fps.

Porting will help with muzzle lift but it may actually increase the felt recoil into the web of your hand. Rather than the gun dissipating its energy in a vertical fashion, more of the energy will get pushed back into your hand. Porting is great to help with quicker second shot target acquisition, but not so good at reducing felt recoil.

A muzzle brake on a rifle that redirects the blast angled back can reduce felt recoil some. Ported handguns only direct the blast up.
