Hi all,

Just wondering what the best dies would be for the 475 Linebaugh and what brass is a good choice?

Thanks for your time!

I prefer Hornady dies and I use nothing but Starline brass in my .475.

Welcome to the forum!

I can't recommend the Hornady dies that I purchased very recently. They wouldn't size the case down small enough to have any grip on the bullet. I returned them, bought the RCBS and Redding Profile Crimp die and the problem was solved.

matabele,

I have used Lee dies 480 Ruger / 475 Linebaugh for years and love 'em, great price and quality. I've used Hornady, and Starline brass with no problems or special preference.

I use nothing but Hornady dies. Like anything else, you might get a bad set but it is so rare and Hornady will make it right.
I have found the dimensions are correct for the best case tension. The expander is the right size and is short so much of a boolit will go into unexpanded brass.
I have been using Hornady brass but one day I loaded some of Whitworths Starline to try in my BFR and it was a tiny bit more accurate.
New brass will not be accurate until a few firings so the work hardening evens out the grain structure.
Accuracy depends on even case tension from shell to shell and Starline will get you there faster.
I had so much trouble with RCBS dies getting my .44 to shoot for IHMSA that I went to work. I found every case had a different feel when seating boolits or bullets. I made a seat pressure measuring device to sort loads. My whole bench top would be full of piles marked for tension. All would group but light tensioned brass would group as much as 10" from the tight ones.
I had BR dies special made but what a pain to load with.
After trying Hornady dies I have no need for the BR dies and some .44 revolvers shot as small as 1/2" at 50 meters consistently.
Then a few will think a big caliber needs to be crimped to death and that is where trouble starts. That will destroy any case tension the dies gave you. Even a separate crimp die can cause a problem if it is made for jacketed because it can size a cast boolit and if you use it for a full profile on cast it ruins case tension. The Lee FCD can ruin a load fast.
If you start to depend on crimp you might as well pull the boolits with pliers and put them in a slingshot.
These were all loaded with Hornady dies and shot at 50 yards. .475, .44 and 45-70 revolvers.

Anyway fellas, what you do at the bench is so very important and what tools you use is even more important so if it is wrong no amount of shooting will help you at all.
Pound out 1000 rounds on a Dillon as fast as you can and go have fun making noise but I will take 50 that hit the target every time any day.
When I drop the hammer on a deer at 10 yards or 110 yards I expect the boolit to hit where I aim and I am the only weak link.
Refine how you load and do a LOT of thinking at the bench. There is a reason most hand loads out shoot factory loads.
A revolver is so different from a pistol or rifle, you need to toss those ideas and start anew.

I've used Hornady and RCBS dies and the Hornady dies are the ones I use most. I also use Hornady and Starline brass. I'm a big fan of starline but I can tell you I have hornady brass that has over a dozen reloadings on them at full house velocity (what else is there
;\)
) and I have never had a a failure. I haven't run the starline as long but so far no problems but with as much as I like starline just visually and in handling I give the edge to Hornady and this is over tens of thousands of rounds for what that's worth. I have about 3000 rounds of Hornady and a 1000 of starline which is probably more than most deal with. Have fun!

I use Lee dies the most and I've been using Mag Tech brass in my .454 Casull and .500 S.&W. MAG.,very good brass from what I've experienced-much better than the winchester brass I've been using in .44 mag,.357 mag,7mmT.C.U.I don't know if they make brass in the .475 but you can check at Midway.
