Picked up an old Rem. 742 Woodmaster for next to nothing. How much difference in ballistics can one expect from a SA 30.06 from a bolt? Just wondering if it might be worth using. It's in good shape and would make a good trader if I don't like it. Never had a semi in a large cal. before. As of yet, I have not taken it to the range. I know they're not much for value, but it was a really cheap buy.

Not enough to make it any less effective.

Felt recoil will be less tho.

A bolt gun is inherently more accurate, but some semi's shoot darn good, dead deer good. Give it a good runthrough, you may have a winner.

Well, I have a mini 14 that shoots very sweet, but the ejection system is much different. Had a hunting buddy years ago that loved his, and he seemed to have no trouble with deer being any less dead than dead. If I remember right, I think his liked the 180g better than anything else. I'll get it out and try it, but I think my bolt will be my choice anyway.

Al,

I've had a 742 carbine in '06 for 37 years. Shoots fantastic; however, if you reload, you must stick with the medium burn rate powders, ie, IMR 4895, AA2495. Use the M1 Garand data. The gas system will not function well with the slower powders that works so well in the bolt guns, ie, the 4350s, etc. Also, if you are a "lefty" watch for the brass ejecting down your shirt sleeve. I got a scar from that one.

Thanks, Doc. I almost sold it yesterday, but I wanted to try it out first.

Im a gas gun guy, I love having a second shot if need be and have found that although I can work a bolt fast enough for a second shot I just dont like to. I find the dif. in accurracy a non factor. The target is still dead. Im in to mitary firarms such as the M1 Garands and the M1A's. Just my 2cents
