A good muzzle brake makes a big difference in felt recoil to me. I have a 12 inch T.C. with factory break, and had a chance one day to compare it with a 14 in. with magnaports.Shooting the same ammo, 300gr bullets re7 powder,my hunting ammo, the 14 inch was a lot harder in recoil.Had another friend there and he agreed.I also have a 14 in. .358 JDJ barrel with magnaports and the recoil on it is stiff.Recoil force seems to want to torque the gun in the hand, instead of comeing straight back. 308 striker has a savage brake so I have 3 different models to compare and some work a lot better than others.TC break seems to work best of all I have.So when I go to the range ,I take several guns and spend all day ,shoot a few lay it down, pick up something lighter till my nerves settle.

430man The 44 I had before was a Colt Anaconda With a 6"-7" Barrel. I dont remember Exactly. That Thing KICKED like a MULE ! The 45-70 Also Will put the Hurt To ME with Full LOADS Such as Factory Hornady 325 FlexTips at 1750fps. The Custom Loads I am Shooting are from Reed's Ammo They Are 300 XTP JHP at 1500fps , They Shoot GREAT For ME ! And From the recoverd Bullets They Should Work Realy well on DEER . I have a Freind with a BFR I NEED TO SHOOT The Colt is my Only Real World Experiance with a 44. And I Didnt Enjoy It .
Yes, shoot it, you will love it. I had many TC's and even the 30-30 was really rough to shoot with one hand and only two hands made it bearable. I have large hands though. I have shot my BFR .475 and the 45-70 many times with one hand and I have thousands of shots with a Freedom .475 from Creedmore using one hand. I can not even think of TC in 45-70! I really hate the grip angle and even Pachmeyer's did not make them comfortable. I am the farthest from recoil sensitive as you can get and have kept hitting targets at 200 yards with blood flying from my knuckle being cut by a SBH trigger guard that was not smoothed off. But nothing will make me like a TC. Anyway, your 300 gr load is super for deer so go for it. If you shoot that load from a 10" BFR you will be instantly in love. The BFR will let you move to 420 gr bullets at around 1600 fps without as much recoil as the .44. I have to ask what powder you are using in the 45-70? Have you tried SR 4759?

I figure it cost me not much over $2 for 20 shots, certainly not over $2.50. I cast my own boolits so they are free.

I HATE muzzle breaks for hunting. They require ear protection at all times and I do not want to be unable to hear deer. One or two shots at deer does not hurt my ears but one shot on the range does big time. I don't know what the difference is but I do not want a brake knocking me out of my stand. I tried the muffs with the electronics in them but could not tell where sounds were coming from. Some of those electronic ear plugs work but cost a fortune. I am on SS.

No roof, just an archery stand or a ground stand. It is strange that shooting at a deer is different then taking a shot at a target. I shot a friends .50 BMG one day and the blast from the brake peeled the muff off---WOW. I don't need that from a revolver.

I've been using hearing protection, while hunting, for around 15 years now and it's never caused me to miss an opportunity at deer, squirrel, turkey or any other game I've hunted. I have two ported and one braked and neither bother me while shooting or hunting. But, I also will not shoot any weapon without hearing protection, but that's just me...

Hi guys, Newbie chipping in here. I got into firearms just a few years back. I found that I like handguns more than long guns, all though if it goes boom I like it. My first hand gun was a .44mag. I got it to match a Win '94. There was a point when I was learning when my mind set swiched from 'oh no, here come the boom" to "oh boy, here come the boom!" Shooting became much easier and more fun on that day. I just picked up a TC .270 and I'm learning about big booms all over again.

Yep, my 45-70 will wear me out after 60 rounds or so. My heavy loads make me put her up after 40-45 rounds. My 44mag has never come close to wearing me out. You guys that shoot the 45-70 BFR how well does that gun hold up to the constant pounding? That has been a gun of interest to me for a very long time. What about accuracy??
