Recoil seems to be a topic that comes up more often than not--- there is one guy trying to tame a 44 mag and another looking at a guy shooting a 45-70 BFR--
I would like to say now that recoil is someting each shooter must come to grips with(no pun there)
I have found that the 454, 475 and the 480 are just too much gun to shoot more than 50+ rounds at the range--However I shoot a 308 encore well over 50 rounds in the same setting.
I find if I shoot the heavy recoil guns a lot my hand begins to shake and as hard as I try the movement will not stop.
I can hone my form with the 22LR and the 38 spl but it takes the big boom to get me fired up.
Now I will tell you I do not like to dodge in bound revolvers so---
To end my rant I would like to say--find the recoil level that is right for you and try to shoot more often and hone your skills--not hurt your wrist.

The shaking thing seems to be more common than I thought. Gregg Richter metioned the same thing and I have the same issue. I've learned I have to take a break when shooting the big boys and spend time with one of my rifles or something with no recoil and then start up again. If I continue to push once the shaking starts my groups just gett bigger and i get more frustrated. Other than that uncontrollable issue I've never had a problem controlling big cartridges in little guns but you hit the nail on the head that guys have to make individual decisions on what is comfortable and ethical for them to hunt with. The biggest handgun in the world won't do you any good if your so intimdated by it you close your eyes and duck when you pull the trigger.

When I started shooting the 44 I had problems with the recoil. Shooting 44sp's & moderate 44mag's help immensely with the proper utilized range time.
P.S. Bug is a very good shot! He loves his 44's and particularly favors his 45's!

Also some physical issues to factor in. I know that in the last few years arthritus has started to develop in my hands, especially my right (shooting) hand. My hands actually hurt if I clap hard for a minute or two. That definetly has a influence on how the smack of recoil feels in my hand. By the way, I also do the shaking thing after repeated shots like you guys mentioned.

When shooting the big revolvers from a bench and resting my elbows on the table, I put carpenter's knee pads under my elbows because the recoil slam really drives your elbows into the bench. When shooting offhand, that problem does not exist; I find it more comfortable. The shakes come from your nerves saying "enough," especially when shooting from the bench, IMO. And yes, that is time to quit.
No it is not enjoyable to shoot these but if you want to use them you gotta sight them in. Ninety-five percent of my shooting with the big bores is with non-maximum loads and I do find those enjoyable shooting offhand, especially at steel. There is a satisfaction that comes from that big CLANG and watching the plate get thrown back on the chains.
Everybody has different tolerance levels and usually experience will raise your tolerance levels if that is what you want. But not everybody does.

And Yes I am Going to Tame a 44 Mike, if you are shooting a 45-70 contender, you are already at what I consider PAIN! You will have no problems shooting a BFR 45-70 or .475 because your recoil is beyond them by a wide margin. You are so far above a .44's recoil I don't know why you hesitate. The BFR 45-70 is pleasant to shoot all day, feels less then a .44. I am not recoil sensitive in the least but I hate TC's.

430man The 44 I had before was a Colt Anaconda With a 6"-7" Barrel. I dont remember Exactly. That Thing KICKED like a MULE ! The 45-70 Also Will put the Hurt To ME with Full LOADS Such as Factory Hornady 325 FlexTips at 1750fps. The Custom Loads I am Shooting are from Reed's Ammo They Are 300 XTP JHP at 1500fps , They Shoot GREAT For ME ! And From the recoverd Bullets They Should Work Realy well on DEER . I have a Freind with a BFR I NEED TO SHOOT The Colt is my Only Real World Experiance with a 44. And I Didnt Enjoy It .

I agree, what we all do is a hobbie.I like to enjoy myself and get better at it.Find what level you enjoy and keep hammering.I have put almost 1000 rounds through my little colt since Feb.,and if it weren't fun I don't think I would have accomplished this. And my shootin has also benefitted from this.

My problem has never been felt recoil in my hand. The problem for me is shooting pistols that race towards my face and head when fired. A good muzzle break can really help this issue. Everyones' recoil tolerance is different. The same round can really recoil differently in different guns. To me my Competitor in 376 Steyr has less felt recoil and alot less muzzle rise than an unbreaked Freedom Arms 454 and I'm sure it's the opposite for some. Recoil tolerance is an individual issue. I think muzzle flash and recoil speed may bother some more than they let on. If 4 pounds of metal zipping towards your face at mach 1 doesn't distract you, your nerves are tougher than mine. I know gun weight plays a major factor in this.
