I remember when they started the uproar about the Confederate flags. I was on my last hitch in the Navy and the "kinder, gentler" and don't ask don't tell policies had just been forced on the military. As a staff instructor at Great Lakes NTC we were told to be on the lookout for "Confederate flags and any other gang related paraphernalia". That was also when they decided to let women into the combat rates, the first Gunners Mate "A" school class with females in it resulted in a call to me from the small arms instructor. It seems there was a young lady that didn't think she should have to load the .50 cal. because she could "just bat my eyes at some big strong guy and have him do it".
The whole thing was a mess and obviously still is, I for one don't want a kinder gentler military, I want big strong meat eaters! I don't care if they are male or female, black or white , straight or gay as long as they do the job they are paid for and good order and discipline is maintained.
My oldest Grandson is in Afghanistan in the USMC and my oldest Granddaughter left for Navy boot camp last Monday. I fear for them both but I know they will do their jobs and do them well.
