I have a 7-08 but want input on my next choice for hunting and target shooting in an encore barrel.

I will be primarily hunting hogs and deer and smaller vermin.

7-08is good for deer & hogs. Might consider a smaller one --- 223 maybe?

And why don't you want a 7-08 Encore barrel.....

I absolutely love the 7-08. It's fast, recoil is acceptable, hard hitting, and very accurate. There in lies my problem. I have considered the 260 and the 308 but I either gain recoil and foot pounds or loose both and not change much. I just wanted another caliber.

I like the 223 if you take deer out of the mix and hunt hogs and smaller, which is something I have seriously considered. Also thought about 338 Federal w/ MB for elk and larger. Both are affordable. Hmmmmm... Maybe I need 2 barrels.

Any suggestions on a hand load caliber you would consider over the 7-08. I am sick of looking at ballistic tables.

A .223, 7-08 and 338-06 would cover anything you would likely ever hunt.

And that's where this site will lead you to the poor house! My second barrel after the 7-08 was the 22-250 - great for targets, varmints, etc.

If you want to stay with the 08 case, 338 Federal would be a good choice for you "third" barrel. It is the ballistic equivalent of the 338 JDJ#2. I have one in the FA single shot & it is fun to shoot. Alternatively, as suggested above, the 338-06 will give you a little more velocity (and power) at the cost of additional recoil. Might even go ahead & get a 375 (JDJ or other) if you really want to move up.
