I got an old Varmint Hunter mag (july-sept 2007). A kent kaufman and wayne benz had a short article on having A&P protype and repair do some sort of conversion on an old contender barrel leaving a short section of original barrel and somehow internall threading it and getting a short barrel blank and threading that so barrels could be changed quicker while not having to remove scope base/rings and such. I dont quite grasp how this could be done to change calibers? Anyone else recall this article and understand it better-it didnt really go into details. I dont have a contender but was curious just the same.

Barry Brown, a retired local gunsmith, showed me one day a number of barrels that he made this way. He had a VERY cool octagon 14" .221FB that he made up.

Back in the day he would buy up all the Contender barrels possible in cal's smaller than 30-30. He'd then cut them off just ahead of the lug and do just what you describe.

How woulld you make it so the chambers would be changeable? or did that threaded barrel thread all the way into the original barrel part?

The "new" barrel threaded completely inside of the old chamber/lug assembly to where it met the breech face.

Very cool!!

Ahh that would make sense and be pretty cool, would one have to worry about barrel unthreading over time or would it stay pretty tight? Something cool to think about in the future if I could learn the skills to do

I brought this switch barrel subject up with David White 5-6 years ago when he was promoting custom barrels threaded onto contender & encore stubs but he was concerned with headspace issues between barrels. It seems that a stub/barrel lock could be designed with a threaded screw pin at bottom dead center forward of the chamber and all barrels would have the same matching pin position. All barrels for a given stub would just have to be in the same cartridge family so the ejector worked. Just a thought.

Stubs here in Washington are 99.00 on sale, D and T has them for 75.00 but either way after you buy barrel, pay for machining and finish work total cost is 600.00 or more. You might be able to save a couple hundred if using a take off barrel but then what condition is it in??? Unless your just building a bench gun and don't care about cost So whats the solution to all this expense?
