I finally got to spend some serious range time today with my new Contender in 30-30,and am very happy with the accuracy with factory loads. I got consistent 7/8" 3 shot groups at 100yds with Remington 150gr. Core-lokt ammo. Does anyone have any info on how they will perform on deer with the 14" barrel? Ive killed alot of game with Core-Lokt bullets in rifles,I shoot them because they are readily available, inexspensive, and accurate in my guns. Im just curious about bullet expansion and performance in the shorter hangun barrel.Sorry, I had this posted in the hunting section and realized this will be the appropriate section,

I have always thought this would be a great load

I bet you are right. I want to lean towards the lighter bullets for improved expansion at the slower handgun velocities. But in all reality Im betting the 150 Core-Lokts will do good. I know they have in all my rifles. I will try some lighter loads. Just around here your choices for ammo are limited. Probably have to go online. The good thing is, I have till next fall to try them out on hogs, turkey, and coyotes, before deer season arrives.

muddy,

I have used the Remington 30/150 RN core lock't in my 30 cal handguns for years. 30-30 WCF, 30-30 AI, 30 Herrett, 309 JDJ. In the 30-30, 12" Hunter, I use a factory duplication load with Accurate 2015, WW brass, WLR primer. Vels are in the 2,000 to 2,100 range. Have shot many whitetails and mulies, antelope, gophers, coyotes, prairie dogs. I have had text book performance in all of these. The factory load clocked approximately the same, hence, my target velocity for the handloads. I think you will be very happy with the load, assuming the accuracy is acceptable. One doesn't need a "premium" bullet at these velocities.

Thanks for the advice doc! I really think they will do a good job. Ive never lost an animal hit with a core-lokt bullet. I will keep my shots under 100yds. and try my best to put them in the boiler. My range session today was a great confidence booster!
