I can't think of many that don't think the Remington XPs aren't super shooters but a few questions linger.

Several don't like the repeater rear grip versions yet the gun itself leans heavily towards more what I like (so far). I'm assuming the MAIN thoughts on them is that the R doesn't have the target type solid reciever?

Some have said they "are more suitable" for bench style shooting. I for one didn't plan on any shots without a REAL good rest anyway.

The second question is on the triggers. I gotta have a light trigger for best accuracy. No big quiz there. I dont recall (its been awhile) that my factory trigger on my 35Rem original xp-100 was all that bad but, I had no real intentions of shots past 150 yards and didn't have any troubles with it. I just found the factory nylon grip to be less than satisfactory for my hand.

I see Jewell carries a trigger for the XP-100R but what about the standard "under grip" XP? Anyone finding an after market trigger is needed to get a good 1.5lb trigger?

Recalling that 300 yards HERE is an EXTREMELY long shot (but danged if I wont keep my eyes out for areas that would allow for a few), what is the "real world" hunting range of a 7mm Benchrest round?

Looking at mostly the 120 grain bullets, loading data, etc etc the NUMBERS, which is all I can use at this time, they show something around 250 yards to be AT the end of the sensible whitetail range but quite often real world use don't seem to agree with the numbers from what I've seen. It's seems 200 wouldnt be any kind of real stretch with the right bullet but beyond that?

While this group is definately (IMHO)linked to bigger, more all around aka "longer range" cartridges I'm just curious if anyone has any experience hunting with one?

Pretty set on a gun I found in 260 rem but did find a super looking set up of Xp-100, custom thumbhole stock, Leupy 4x, rings and base, about 100 rounds, 200 brass and RCBS dies in mint condition that is nagging the H outa me.

"Efficient" rounds have always held my interest even though the "bigger boomers" cover all the bases. The 7mm BR is certainly an efficient round from what I see.

Ive never shot a custom thumbhole (laminated) stock but feel it would be more to my liking than the standard Rem stock on the standard XP.

I don't think I'd be limiting myself too much and there IS always that option to rechamber down the road...that is if I dont buy the 260 Rem as well.

Do I "NEED" both? Oh heck no but what's a guy to DO when two different set ups are keeping him up at night?
Then top it off with the "big bores" still are yanking my chain for reasons previously discussed.

I'm "doomed" to buying more than one it seems.

So...XP-100R issues? triggers? and 7mm BR experiences hunting?

Mark Hampton has an article in the Handgun Hunter Magazine. He is using a 308 to hunt goats. I think he has made a switch from Contenders to XP100's the last few years. If he reads this, and would post he would be a good source of knowledge. I think he likes the 308 pretty well for a deer size game handgun cartridge.
He asked me to keep an eye out for another XP100 for him. He must have another build in mind.

The 260 Remington chambering should work very well. The 6.5 is hard to beat with lots of good bullets. My preference in an XP100 would be 260, 7-08, and 308.

Another Option since you are still looking is a Savage Striker. Do some research on this.

Midway Catalog Item 288-765 Savage 110 Barrel Nut Wrench $38.49
Midway Catalog 226-100 Wheeler Engineering Barrel Vise $55.99

Barrells: 22-250, 243, 260, 7-08, 308, 358 are all the same bolt face.

Get a Barrel Vise and a Barrel Nut Wrench, and you can have a Switch Barrel Pistol in any, or all the above chamberings to cover the bases. From what I am told you can switch barrels in 30 minutes in your shop.

I read a post I believe on this site about a Striker Project. Pictures of the stock work, and who he had do trigger work were listed. It is probably between here and page 29, which is as far back as I have read so far.

The switch barrel pistol is a good idea, and way cheaper than owning 2 or 3 of them to cover the hunting bases. Varmint Rig install the 22-250. Come Deer Season install the 260, 7-08, or 308. Goint after larget game install the 358.

Midway has barrels as cheap as $136 for the Savage 110 rifle. A trip to the gunsmith's to have it whacked off to say 16" and recrowned, and you are in business.

I got off track on your XP topic, but this might be some food for thought. As you can probably tell, I have given this some thought myself.

And BTW, I have had XP's, both mid and rear grips. You can adjsut the stock trigger on both comfortably to 2#. You can get jewels for the rear grip for real BR type shooting and some are available for the mid grip, don't remember who.

7BR for hunting would be hard pressed at 200 yards, 7-08 would be better.

And what he said above, too. I really like Strikers.

I have several switch barrel XP-100's.
Once set up you can switch a barrel in less than 30 minutes.
Ideally, you would want to have a pinned lug, so you don't worry about the lug rotating on you.
I consider the 7BR case about 250 yard cartridge.

Any trigger that will work on a Rem. 700 will work on the XP-100R or if you take a single-shot XP and convert it to a rear grip.
A "R" version XP can shoot outstanding groups, and don't let anyone tell you differently.
When working on a factory Remmy trigger, some will adjust down more than others-it all depends upon the luck of the draw.
260 Rem and 7-08 are probably my two favorite deer antelope cartridges based off of the 308 Win case.

Thanks guys. I got help making a decision this AM.

I went to a large gun auction that was a total disaster but swung by the Sporting Clays range to yak with friends.

Low and behold, look what lay there on consignment.

Not a mark on it AND in 260 Rem.
Leupold base, rings and VXIII 2.5x8
3.5 boxes of Nosler 120 grain (just noticed one full box is 125 gr partitions)
half box of Speer varminter 85 gr.
Carrying strap,
RCBS dies
60 once fired brass and brass box.

A big plus was it was owned by a skeet shooting friend of mine that has had it in his safe for several years and decided to sell it.

Color me pretty tickled !

Super news on the switch barrel idea. I hadnt thought it doable on an xp but I'm sure I'd need to make sure I knew what I was doing too.

Really appreciate that info in any case!

Good score. I think the 260 is a really overlooked cartridge. It should do a fine job for you.
