Oh man, Gregg. I wish I'd never seen that. I've read that the 30-06 is a "do everything" round all my life....then you had to show me that JDJ, and I had to look up loads and stats....sigh!

Back to the drawing board. WHAT WAS IT I SAID about " if I was gonna pick ONE cartridge for up to 300 yards MAX AND for closer "brush" shots????

When it comes to manufacturers velocity stats, I would check with several who actually own them and see what MV's they are chronoing as an average.

This fall?? What about PDs?

I guess the SMKs are about the same size as a PD so a hit ANYWHERE in the area of them should be fatal! Just visualize slinging a PD at 2800-ish FPS from a SP at a stationary PD at around 1500yds. That vapor trail would be EASY to see!

Truth be known, first there will be more paper, then steel, then pd's, then game animals.
The 265 HAT's are expensive, so not much goof around shooting with them, but I have over 500 of the 300 grain SMK's

I think 300 grainers in the .338 are a bit light for caliber.

'Course I am just playin' devil's advocate.

I think the PD's would hear the thing cummin' and dodge out of the way becuz of the displacement of air that it wuz pushin'.

Kind of like the "deer whistles" some folks put on their car bumpers.

The 250 grainers don't have much recoil at all but you can tell the difference with the 300 grainers.

I haven't quite figured why they even make 180, 200, and 225 grain bullets in .338??????

Here are some original Barnes Heavy Jacket 300 grainers that I played with in a .300 X .338 wildcat rifle (.300 Win Mag necked up to .338). I since rechambered that rifle to .375 H&H Improved (.375 Ackley Improved) to get "more power."

Barrel, dies and bullets for sale, plus several boxes of 30 cal. Barnes "originals." As you all know, these original Barnes bullets are no longer made.

Ernie, I know that these "Big Thumpers" are not nearly as sexy looking as your 300 grain SMK's. But they got the job done.

Ernie, if you could post a pic of your SMK 300 grainer (if you have already please forgive me, I missed it) and add some of your wisdom on bullet designs, it would be a neat "comparison" and it would be a good refresher course in Bullet Design relating to Ballistic Coefficient.

IE: What Is BC?? I know that you can explain this very well.

Ballistic Coefficient (BC) is basically a number that describe how aerodynamic a bullet is. The higher the number the slower/less it will drop and it will not drift as fast as bullets with lower BC traveling at the same speed.
There is a greater definition that can be given, but I am not going to take the time to explain the system we use came to be.

A lot of people want to use a lighter bullet that they can shoot faster, and they make the wrong assumption that it have less wind drift at the distances they want to shoot it at.

That may or may not be true depending on the speeds of the bullets, the varying BC's of the two bullets, and the said distance they are using for comparison.
