There are 4 openings for this six day self guided hunting trip for May 24, 2009. This should be an ideal hunt for us handgunners since many bow hunters have been on this excursion with great success, (my buddy stuck a 7 footer). The "lodge" is a 83' ship, so, we go where the bears are. The fishing is guided. This will be a father/son trip for me. Too many details to list here, so, send me a P.M. and I'll give you the web site. The cost is $4,950.00.

Fly into Ketchikan, then floatplane to the lodge where the boat will pick us up. The owner/operator is Larry Larson of Wild Alaska Cruises. Check out the articals in the Oct. 2007 and this months issue of Sportsman's News. Paul Harris who wrote the Nov. artical is a friend of mine. http://www.wildalaskacruises.com/sport-fishing-packages.htm

Bear hunting in the Ketchikan area is easy. There are LOTS of bears. The hard thing is judging them while they are alive. It is different than when you are baiting them because you don't have the 50 gallon drum for a size reference. You could easily do a DIY hunt here. There are several places that rent skiffs. I heard that one of them would tow a 16' skiff to a cabin and drop you off for a week or so. The forest service cabins are about $35 a night. If you come up here you will get several opportunities to stalk bears. In May the bears will be feeding on the beaches. You pretty much ride around in the skiff looking at different beaches looking for green grass and bears until you find one you want to stalk.

Believe me, this hunt is a big reach for me, but after hearing what this excursion intails I had to go for it. Typical day: Wake up at 7:30am (no 4am frozen in-the-dark on this trip), the chef has breakfast ready. 8am, on the fully equipped guided fishing boats, fish till 3pm, 4pm, chef cooks dinner, 5pm, in the skiffs hunting bear till 10pm. How can you beat that?

Oh, I posted a pic of Paul's bear on the bragging board. Like Rickie said, the hard part is judging which bear to put the stalk on. You bring your weapon with you when you fish in case you see a bear (the early bear get's the lead). This year they were seeing a average of 6 to 8 bears a day !

Still $5000 grand. That is more that a few new toys for me. They would last a lifetime vs. 6 day hunt! Don't get me wrong, would love to have the opportunity to do this type of hunting. I am more on the side of hunting for free!
Pasco, just out of curiosity how much game to you get to shoot for the $5000?

Rickie should know that better than me, since he is local up there. Me and my son are only planning on one bear each. Paul said he did see wolfs on two occasions, so, if I can get a wolf tag I will. This is really set up to be a 1st class fishing charter that just happens to work out good as a platform to hunt Black Bears from. When you factor in the actual time you will fishing\hunting the cost really is'nt that bad. That's how I justified it, but it don't take much to justify a hunt to me.LOL
