Great forum, I happened to stumble on it today, been glued to the computer for the last hour reading.

I have Ruger SBH in 44 mag, it has the 5.5 inch barrel. I want to put a scope on it. Do I need to take it to a gunsmith and have it drilled to accept a scope. Just need some advice on how to outfit it with some optics. I plan on deer hunting with it this year.

Thanks

mount that i think will work you may be running late for this
year you need some range time with what ever you do.

Most good mounts i.e., Leupold, Burris, T'SOB, etc. will have to be drilled and tapped for the mount. I have an old B-Square mount that requires no gunsmithing. Just remove rear sight but, I don't even know if they make it anymore. I've had this one about 18 yrs. It's the only one I know about that doesn't take some gunsmithing...Welcome...KRal

I used the Weigand base for this 45LC, and it does need to have two holes D&T'd but it is a simple process to perform. Heck you could do it right at the kitchen table :-)

You can get a 6-48 tap and drill bit for about 5 bucks at Midway, you can even borrow mine if you want.

It is a rock solid mounting system for any optic. I wouldn't trust a no drill on anything bigger than a 22 mag ;-)

I went with the Leupold Duel Dovetail and like it very well. If you go with the weaver type base I would use Warne Rings

Welcome to the site Lazydrake! I highly recommend the TSOB mount by SSK Industries. It does require drilling, but its a very strong base.
