I had a contender for a short time back when I was a kid.

now days, I dont even hunt deer anymore...It just doent trip my trigger, no matter the buck's size. It gives me more satisfaction to but my young sons in position to take a good animal ( they have both taken bigger whitetails than most grown men)

I do however Hunt hogs with a vengence. Took 14 last year with my .44's. Only up to 5 so far this fall.

I was wondering about getting another Thompson Center product for giggles and grins and to extend my range a bit. I know nothing about them.

What is the difference between Contender, Encore and G2?

Will probably start off with a used gun purchased from next weekend's gunshow.
I prefer something Hard hitting. 45/70 for example.
help,
Chaos....bored with the .44's

The Contender handles the 30-30 and any wildcat there of very well. It also handles mild loads of the 45-70. There are very popular wildcats of the 444 and 405 case that “push” it to its limits. The Encore handles everything up to the 375 H&H and even the 416 Rigby available in factory barrels. The 45-70 in the Encore can handle everthing but Ruger #1 Loading data. It is the “Big Brother” of the Contender and then some. 308 based cartridges do very well in the Encore and are manageable. The 06 based rounds, particularly improved versions, are just awesome out of a pistol. However, I find them uncomfortable to shoot with out a break.

Awesome explaination. I do appreciate you taking the time to clear all that up for me.

What is the Difference in the contender that I had as A kid and this G2 contender?

Does a 30-30 do well out of such short barrels?

Will the contender handle Medium Marlin loads in 45-70? Can my wrist handle it?

And last question, Is a 7-30 waters just a 30-30 necked down to .284/7mm?

the G2 is a newer stronger version of the Contender but barrels for the G2 and old model are interechangeable. There are minor variations in the way the two actions work but both are excellent guns. The G2 you will almost definitely want to do a trigger job on immediately. The 30-30 will roughly run a 150gr bullet up to about 2100fps and the 125gr to about 2400fps out of a 14" barrel.

Basically...yes. The body does have less taper and a more distinct shoulder than the 30-30.

W/ you being a hog hunting nut, the .35 Remington may be a little more up your alley. Mine shoots 180gr SP's at 2182fps but recoil is stout, but very manageable.

Now...the 45-70. This thing is the true hammer of Thor and will penetrate through virtually anything!! That is the upside. The downside...it has all of the recoil to match!!!

One thing I recommend before you buy an Encore is to hold one in your hand. I cannot get my finger to the trigger with a proper grip on the Encore due to the size of the grip and distance to the trigger. You can get aftermarket grips for them which helps but I just stay with the Contender, plus the lighter weight makes for much better handling.

I don't have one...so I've never been able to experiment. The .35 however...that's a different story. It shoots bullet weights very similar to the .375" at about the same velocity but the .358's have a higher BC which equals flatter trajectory and more retained energy.

No. If you decide to go with the 45-70 in a Contender be sure and follow the data for the T/C Contender in the loading manuals. As far as recoil you will have to decide what you can handle. My experience with the 45-70 has been good. I have owned both the Contender and the Encore and I prefer the Contender hands down. To me the Contender is easier to mange under heavy recoil than the Encore. I think it is because the center-line of the bore is lower and more inline with your hand that the Encore. I would recommend getting it with a muzzle brake or Mag-na-porting. Mine is 14” with Mag-na-porting it shoots and handles well. The 45-70 has plenty of power at the level the Contender will handle and is more than enough for hogs. I don’t care how big they get.
