I WAS SHOOTING A 7 1/2 INCH FIRST ISSUE (2nd GENERATION) COLT NEW FRONTIER IN 357 MAG YESTERDAY (4/28/19) OFF A REST, AT PAPER, AT 25 YARDS, WITH A 158gr XTP, AND A 158gr SPEER TMJ, BOTH OVER 16.5grs OF 296. THE XTP's GROUPS WERE SO SO WHILE THE TMJ's GROUPS WERE INPRESSIVE, TROUBLE IS BOTH BULLETS WERE HITTING 5 - 6 INCHES HIGH WITH THE REAR SIGHT ALL THE WAY DOWN. I AM GOING TO TRY LIGHTER BULLETS, e.g. 140's AND 125's. WHAT SHUD I TRY? I WANT SHOOTER BULLETS FOR FUN AND MAYBE OCCASIONAL CARRY AT THE RANCH, NOT PLANNING ON USING IT FOR DEER HUNTING. SPEER HAS A 125gr TMJ THAT LOOKS GOOD, AND SPEER ALSO HAS SOME 125gr BONDED BULLETS. HAVEN'T EVEN LOOKED AT HIGH VELOCITY CAST BULLETS, PREFERRING TO STAY WITH JACKETED BULLETS AT THE SPEEDS I MAY HAVE TO PUSH THE BULLETS TO LOWER THE POI. ANY SUGGESTIONS? ANY EXPERIENCES WITH HV LIGHTER BULLET LOADS IN THE 357?

Rey, The only bullet I use in my 4" Python for 20+ years is the 125 gr. Sierra JHC. I figured with the shorter barrel a lighter bullet with more velocity would be the berries. It is. Groundhogs and deer just hate it.
Many moons ago I used some 125 gr. Horn. XTPs. Did not perform well. What I have left are paper punchers.
Rey, maybe you ought to get rid of that NF and buy a Python. My 4" shoots 158s with plenty of sight adjustment as well as the 125s.
I doubt if 140s will be any better and I'd bet 125s in your gun won't quite do it, either. 5-6" is a lot to make up.
Good luck.

I agree that 5-6 inches will be very difficult to overcome. I stopped using the same 16.5 / 296 with 158 XTP's in a couple of my .357 revolvers, and dropped to 140 XTPs with 13.5 / 2400. In my case accuracy improved, but POI only dropped about 1-1/2" @ 25 yds. I've never tried 125's, but the POI should drop even more. Maybe another inch (?)
That New Frontier front sight doesn't give any satisfactory options. I'm wondering if the bottom of the sight leaf in that Accro rear sight can be filed to let it sit lower?
I haven't mentioned 110 gr. bullets because you may not find satisfactory accuracy ... you'd just have to test them.
While you're testing, you might try a dozen 38 Special cases, too, with Plus P loaded 140's or 125's. Who knows?

KEN: NOT MUCH ON THE REAR SIGHT TO FILE DOWN ON. IT WAS A BRIGHT DAY SO MAYBE THAT COULD ACCOUNT FOR AN INCH OR SO OF HEIGHTH??? I THINK I WILL SKIP THE 140's AND SEE WHAT I CAN DO WITH SOME 125's. AS YOU SUGGEST, I MIGHT ALSO TRY SOME 38 SPECIALS, YOU NEVER KNOW.

DOC: THIS NF, WITH SOME REALLY NICE STAGS ON IT, IS REALLY GOOD LOOKING AND I WUD LIKE TO MAKE IT A FUNCTIONAL SHOOTER.

Do you have room to go up on your powder charge? If so, that should bring your POI down some.

RANDY: I THOUGHT OF THAT BUT I DO NOT WANT TO GO "ATOMIC" ON MY LOADS WITH THAT SAA, AND THE BEAUTIFUL STAG GRIPS WUD LEAVE ME WITH A FIST FULL OF HANDBURGER IF I WENT HOTTER.

TRIES 125gr XTP's OVER 9.3grs OF UNIQUE IN THE NEW FRONTIER TODAY (5/4/19). OFF A REST @ 25 YARDS, USING A 6 O'CLOCK HOLD ON A 2 INCH DOT, 4 OF 8 SHOTS HIT AT THE TOP OF THE 2 INCH SIGHTING DOT, SO 125's WILL GET ME INTO THE BULLSEYE AT 25 YARDS. I THINK I WILL GET SOME OF THE 125gr SPEER TMJ's. ALSO I AM THINKING THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO FIND A SWEET SPOT IN THE 9.0 - 10.0 grs OF UNIQUE RANGE. I AM OPTING FOR FASTER UNIQUE RATHER THAN THE SLOWER POWDERS LIKE VVN110, 296, etc. BECAUSE SLOWER POWDERS SEEM TO DO BETTER WITH HEAVIER BULLETS, AND I WANT A LOAD THAT WILL WORK OK IN SHORTER BARRELS SUCH AS A 2 3/4 INCH SECURITY SIX AND A 3 1/2 INCH MODEL 27.

Rey, glad the 125 will work! I used that 125 XTP over a healthy dose of 2400 to great effect on Hill Country whitetails. I later learned the dose was a bit too hot (Herters 357 Atomic hot!), but the bullets still held together well at what must have been some impressive impact velocities. One was a front on brisket shot at 40ish (IIRC) yards. I recovered the slug in the paunch and it was a perfect mushroom. DRT.
