Was wondering what you are using for brass. I broke down and bought some properly head stamped brass which was pretty pricey but I also have some 500 S&W brass that I am going to cut down. I saw something on one of the sites about turning the heads down for use in the FA revolvers, is that also required for the BFR? Also, if anyone has a min/max recipe using Win296/H110 for the BearTooth 440's that would be great as well. Thanks as always for any info you can provide.

The original spec for the .500 JRH has a smaller rim than the .500 S&W. It was designed for the limited confines of the FA83 originally and hence the smaller rim. The BFR was cut for the bigger rim of the .500 Smith & Wesson so it will not be a problem using standard S&W rims.

I use properly headstamped brass myself. I have gotten the best accuracy from top-end 296 loads myself. My BFRs prefer the top-end loads. My go-to (safe in my guns, may not be in yours - my disclaimer) is 29.5 grains of 296 under a 440 grain cast bullet (Cast Performance) and the same load under a 420 grain Kodiak Punch bullet. Rimrock makes a great 440 that is worth considering.

As always, thanks for the information. I was thinking of starting around 27 grains and doing workups in .5 increments so, so based upon the 10% rule, it looks like I'm in the ballpark.

I was looking at the Rimrock bullets before I purchased the Beartooth bullets. I plan on getting some for testing purposes.

I have a BFR so I lucked out on the 500 S&W brass not needing to be turned down.

Well, off I go to the loading bench.

Thanks Again
Mike

Hey Mike
Having the BFR I use Starline 500 S&W brass, I made a simple jig that allows me to cut the cases down on my high-speed arrow cut off saw. I finish them up with my case trimmer. I have sent a couple of requests to Starline over the past coupe of years asking they add 500 JRH to their offering. You never know ? If you don?t ask then you don?t get?
As for loads I have not worked with anything heavier than the Hornady 350 XTP. That said, the load I setup for hunting is the Swift 325 AF powered by Accurate #9 and CCI-350 primers this averages 1528fs. I had also good results with VV-N110 might be one to consider.
Good luck with your load development.

Starline made the original run of .500 JRH brass, and they made a run of it for Buffalo Bore to use in their loaded ammo. As such, Buffalo Bore sells the properly headstamped Starline brass. I am hoping to convince them to offer it on a much broader scale. We'll see...

Has anyone used the 440 gr from the Lee mold? I've cast and shot quite a few Lee handgun molds over the years and have often found they shoot just as accurately as custom molds. Curious if their 440 .501" rf works well in the 500 JRH.

I get my BFR 500 JRH out of jail next month, so no load data from me. However, I emailed Starline just the other day asking them about the .500 JRH, so I'm sure one email won't do much, but if we keep bugging them surely they'll give in. Some of the brass the offer I've never even heard of, so .500 JRH shouldn't be that hard to do.

I think their minimum batch is 10,000 cases. If you can get a group buy together...
