I?ve been hard at it since the opening of the Indiana general firearm season on 11-17 hunting two different areas. Sightings and opportunities have been rather limited at both locations (50 miles apart). Yesterday overlooking my food plot, I had what I thought was three does come in shortly after sun rise. Two were moving in and out of the brushy edges then one stepped out into the clover. I let the SSK 416 Rem Mag eat sending a 300 gr Barnes TSX on its way. At the shot it slammed the deer to the ground ranged at 77 yards. Three more does came in and feed around then all five moved into the adjacent wood lot. After an hour and half a sneaky coyote shows up, spies my deer and decides to have a hot meal. I let the 416 eat again, at the shot it flipped it over across the deer?s legs with a very messing exit. This is my first deer (which turned out to be a button buck) with the 416RM barrel and my first coyote with a handgun (canon). What an exciting morning. I am big on terminal performance and can provide a more in-depth report once I process him however, I can report the right-side shoulder entry is 416 caliber size with the left side shoulder exit near the size of a 50-cent piece and what appears to be a fully dislocated left shoulder. As for the coyote as noted very messy to the tune of six-inch exit certainly not fur friendly. As for the load = Barnes 300 TSX, Hornady 416RM brass, CCI-250, 83.0 grains of H4895 average velocity 2564fs. This is not a max load but extremely accurate, choosing the happy medium of velocity and accuracy.
