I have been waning to experiment with various powders in my 445 SM being that there is not much "up to date" load data for this cartridge. Looking for powders with burn rates between H110 and VV N120 in long straight walled cases with heavy for caliber bullets. I have tried AA1680, VV N120 and H110 thus far and the VV N120 has been on top. I talked with a guy who is using CFE BLK in a 445 SM Dan Wesson 8" revolver and he says he is getting great velocities/accuracy with not as much recoil using this powder behind 335gr. bullets. He said he also liked Norma 200, but it has become hard to come by in his area. Any thoughts or experiences with these powders from the forum? Thanks.

No experience, but I will say I never would have thought about CFE BLK as a straight wall magnum handgun cartridge powder, but looking at load data I have it seems our types of cartridges and the 300 Blackout use similar powders.

Chance,

I've been researching several powders to try in my 445 SM just to see what, if any, improvements are out there. Not trying to re-invent the wheel for the 445, but just trying to resurrect the cartridge. There isn't as much info on the web, IMO, on this cartridge which is why I'll have to compare and experiment. Plus it is fun too! Besides the CFE BLK, there are three other powders I would like to try; AA5744, IMR4227 and AA11FS. The AA11FS is showing some promise in big bore cartridges (.475 LB/360 gr.) shooting heavies and I like the idea of a flash suppressor additive. . .should be good for wheel gun shooters. I think I may make a powder order today just to have something to do and make BOOM for the up coming July 4th weekend. I'll post my findings.

AA5744, and IMR 4227 should work well, but may not deliver top velocity. I have found that they can produce very accurate loads because they bulk up nicely in the bigger cases. I'm using AA5744 in my 444 Marlin Contender barrel with 300gr XTP's and getting a little over 1600fps. This is by no means a top load for the cartridge, but it is super accurate, and is more than powerful enough for our deer and hogs we have. I tried AA1680 in my 414 SM with 210gr XTP's, and while it filled the case pretty well, it didn't offer the accuracy or the velocity I was able to achieve using W296. I'm very interested in your experiment using CFE BLK. Keep us posted.

I placed an order with Gaff's this afternoon for the CFE BLK and AA 11FS along with some other powders I'm running low on. . .should have it by Friday. I'm getting good velocities with the 1680, but just not the accuracy. The VV N120 has very good velocity low ES/SD and good accuracy when I had the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro mounted, now that I have mounted a scope to it. . .not so good - IMO. The load I used to zero the scope in was just a slapped together load of Hornady 265 gr. FLPT over 26.5 gr. of 2400 and this produced 2" groups at 100 yds. So I know the accuracy is there, I just gotta find the magic dust! Yes, I will surly keep the forum updated on the new powders.

Have you tried Ramshot Enforcer? It is a little slower than A-1680 and might deliver the accuracy you are seeking.

Ramshot Enforcer has provided some very accurate loads for me in 357 and 45 Colt.

That turned a light bulb on.
I wonder if CFE BLK would work in a 357 Maximum?

You are right about the load data available being out dated. We keep having more and more new powders brought out, and very little reloading data for them. Especially for the cartridges that are not really popular.

When in question about a powder ...OR when I am looking at a specific cartridge,,, I will call the powder company and talk to a Tech to see if they have any load Data,, and often times they will off up some info, and Loads NOT PUBLISHED.

I did exactly that and one gave me a response of, "we do not have a listing or experience with that caliber." and the other gave a better response, but not what I was looking for of, " we have not worked with the 445SM with this powder, but we have with the 44 mag. Start at the max listed powder charge for the 44 mag and work up slowly from there."

I received my powder order and took to the range with a full ammo box of fresh power loads. . .CFE BLK and No. 11FS. I only shot the 315 gr. bullets so far. I have placed an order for some 280 gr. and 300 gr., when they arrive I will load some more up and give them a whirl. After which, I will post a complete report from min. to max. loads, velocities and accuracy of my T/C 445SM with these new powders. I will say this though. . .VV N120 still reigns supreme for the 315's! ! !
