I CHECKED MY 29-3, AND A SPARE 29-3 CYLINDER, AND SURE ENUFF THEY HAVE .432 THROATS, SO MY QUESTION IS: WHAT DIAMETER SWC IS LIKELY TO BE THE MOST ACCURATE IN THIS GUN? WHAT DIAMETER WUD YOU TRY FIRST?

I would try some .432 cast from maybe MBWs since that is the largest diameter you can probably get. I would want to go with a lower BHN to make sure that the bullet obturates. GT Bullets has some offerings in a lower BHN in a 240gr PB and also a 240gr GC. This means running the velocity at least 1100 FPS plus in a Plain based bullet.

If you can't get the level of accuracy you are looking for with the cast bullets, try some .430 jacketed for comparison. Sometimes the jacketed bullet will give better accuracy even with the large throats.

LOOKED THRU MY BULLET INVENTORY AND FOUND A FEW DIFFERENT 44 BULLETS, AND CHECKED THE CYLINDER WITH .431 OTCB 240 SWC's AND THEY WERE SNUG ENUFF PASSING THRU 4 OF THE CHAMBERS BUT 2 CHAMBERS WERE TIGHTER AND I COULD NOT PUSH THE BULLET THRU. GOING TO SEND IT TO FERMIN GARZA (NO RELATION) AKA 2 DOGS ON ANOTHER SITE, SO HE CAN CHECK THE CYLINDER AND REAM AS APPROPRIATE TO STANARDIZE ALL THE THROATS. THEN I WILL PROBABLY TRY MY OTBC 240's FIRST.

Shoot the gun first, so you can see what it is doing. Fermin will tell you the same thing and He may even ask you about it.
I have a Ruger Birdshead that has tight throats and it shoots good. You never know about these things. And Yes it drives me crazy when a gun is like yours. I had a 5 1/2" 45 Ruger once that had 2 tight and four loose and I would get a group of the four and then 2 shots would be off high and to the left. Every time!!!! AAARRGGGG The only way I could hunt with it was to mark the 2 tight chambers on the cylinder with a sharpie and stuff empties in there. Down the road it went when I got the first chance.

45--- 0ne of my buddies over on the S&W forum has good results

with Speer swaged 240gr SWC 430'' boolits in his 29-3 Silhouette.

432-433 throats on his 29-3.. To make those Speers fit the BIG

throats he tumble lubes the in LEE Alox lube a couple times. The

LEE stuff dries and adds a bit of diameter. Remember the saying..

If all else failed for cast Bullets you can powder coat them and you will pick up at least .002 to the diameter. You can get a Lee sizer and then size them what diameter you need.

Another option is to check with the bullet manufacturer and let them know what is going on and ask them to send them to you unsized. Then you don't have to powder coat and you can size them to whatever you need, again with a Lee sizer.

Largest Lee sizer made is .430'':-( Lyman and RCBS make a .431''

l have heard NEI will make you any bullet mold and sizer desired.

Just send $$$$$$$$:-(

The problem has been known for years with big throated Smith revolvers..

lndustry standard seems to be .430'' in 44 magnum. 432 in 44 Spec

Factory took the ''one size fits all'' route in years past..

Happy me no longer owns any big throated Smith revolvers:-)
