SAWFISH's RECENT POST ABOUT SOME LUCKY GUN ACQUISITIONS GOT ME TO THINKING ABOUT HOW SOMETIMES HOW WE ACQUIRE GUNS CAN BE AS INTERESTING AS THE GUNS THEMSELVES.

THE TOP LUGER IS A DWM 1920 COMMERCIAL IN 3O LUGER THAT I BOUGHT FROM A PROBATE JUDGE AT THE HOUSTON GUN SHOW MANY YEARS AGO. HE HAD UPGRADED HIS COLLECTION AND DID NOT NEED THIS GUN ANYMORE. GOT IT FOR A GOOD PRICE AND IT IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE (COLLECTOR/SHOOTER) OF A 1920 COMMERCIAL. 30 LUGER AMMO IS READILY AVAILABLE, ESPECIALLY FROM SOME OF THE EUROPEAN AMMO COMPANIES. WHEN I THINK OF THIS GUN I RECALL ELEMER KEITH'S STORY, IN THE GUN FIGHTING CHAPTER IN HIS BOOK "SIXGUNS BY KEITH", ABOUT A LAWMAN THAT EMPTIED HIS 30 LUGER INTO THE BACK OF AN INNOCENT BLACK COWBOY, WHO THEN TURNED AROUND, DREW HIS 45 COLT SAA AND DRILLED THE ATTACKER THRU THE HEART. THE BLACK COWBOY LIVED LONG ENUFF TO KILL THE ATTACKER AND PROVIDE INFO ON THE OWNER OF THE CATTLE HE WAS HANDLING.

THE LOWER LUGER IS A DWM WWI ERA 9mm. A GENTLEMAN IN BROWNSVILLE THAT RAN THE LOCAL GAS CO. WAS IN POOR HEALTH, AND KNEW THE END WAS NEAR. HE WAS LOOKING FOR A GOOD HOME FOR HIS GUNS. HE HAD THIS LUGER AND WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT MIGHT BE WORTH SO A GUNSHOP BUDDY OF MINE SUGGESTED HE CHECK WITH ME (I'M NO EXPERT BUT I HAVE A COUPLE OF REFERENCE BOOKS). I FIGURED OUT WHAT IT MAY BE AND TOLD HIM I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE WORTH $700 (THIS WAS ALSO SOME YEARS BACK). HE WAS OFFERING THE GUNS TO FAMILY MEMBERS, BUT NOT FOR FREE. A WHILE LATER HE CALLED ME AND ASKED IF I WANTED TO BUY THE GUN, I RESPONDED THAT I DID NOT FEEL RIGHT BUYING THE GUN WHEN I HAD SET THE VALUE, HE THEN SAID HE WUD LET ME HAVE IT FOR $400. NO WAY I COULD EVER SELL THIS LUGER AS I FEEL LIKE IT WAS ENTRUSTED TO ME.

THE ABOVE LUGER IS A WWI ERA DWM 9mm, A POLICE REWORK WITH MATCHING MAGAZINES, PROBABLY A WWII BRINGBACK. AGAIN, MANY YEARS AGO I WAS AT A BUDDY's GUNSHOP WHEN HE SHOWED ME THIS GUN. AN OLD LADY BROUGHT IT IN ASKING THAT THE FIRING PIN BE REMOVED SO SHE CUD GIVE IT TO HER GRANDSON. I MADE AN OFFER ON THE GUN AND GRANNY JUMPED ON IT, THE GRANDSON, WELL HE GOT A BB GUN.

THE ABOVE LUGER I NO LONGER OWN. MANY YEARS AGO A ATTORNEY FRIEND CALLED ME AND SAID HE WAS SELLING A LUGER FOR A COUSIN OF HIS. IT WAS A WWII BRINGBACK. I WENT AND PICKED IT UP BUT COULD NOT ID IT, BUT I FIGURED IT WAS UNIQUE BECAUSE OF THE 6 INCH BARREL SO I BOUGHT IT. I SHOWED IT TO A LUGER AUTHORITY AND HE ID'ed IT AS A DWM WWI ERA NAVY LUGER IN AS GOOD A SHAPE AS YOU CAN FIND THEM AND WORTH 3 TIMES WHAT I PAID FOR IT. I TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN OWNERSHIP OF THIS GUN BUT IT WAS A SAFE QUEEN. WHEN RECENTLY BADUBET POSTED A PICTURE OF HIS NEW BOWEN NIMROD IN 475L I GOT THE HOTS FOR ONE BUT WASN'T GOING TO SPEND THE MONEY FOR ONE, BUT THEN ONE CAME UP ON GUNBROKER. THE PACKAGE INCLUDED SOME BRASS, DIES, CAST BULLETS AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF AMMO. THE GUN WAS ALSO CUSTOM FITTED WITH ELEPHANT IVORIES. PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP BE DAMNED, I TRADED STRAIGHT UP FOR THE NIMROD, AND IT AIN'T GOING TO BE A SAFE QUEEN.

Great stuff Rey.......Like I told you before my uncle brought back a S/42 all matching numbers including matching # clip.... Traded for hunt.... Even though you traded for a custom Bowen with the 6" Navy, I am sure it was worth more..... The way I look at it is
"Thank God I had them to trade".....

So you are the one that got it? That is a beautiful firearm. I called the gunshop and they told me it sold. Congrats to you and post some pictures soon.

Nice pieces.

Simpson's LTD, House of Lugers is in my hometown. He deals with them a lot.
