I have decided to put a scope on my new Encore barrel and I'm at a toss-up between the VX-3 2.5-8x32 or the FX-II 4x28. The reason I say toss-up is because I have two of the VX-3's on pure target handguns and find them hard to get on target (on higher magnifications) in hunting situations. . .I hunt wooded timber, 200 yrd. max shot, but a rarity. I have no experience with the fixed 4x and don't know how the 28mm field of view will work out in the hunting woods. I switched over to a Leupold DPP for the quickness and really like it, but this new barrel is showing promise as a real shooter and I would like to capitalize on it's long range potential. So, any of you have the fixed 4x please let me know what you think of it and what sort of range with accuracy that you get out of it. Thank you.

With the variable leave it set at the lowest power when hunting to take advantage of the larger field of view. Then you can turn it up as needed. I seem to always have time to power up as needed.Rarely do you have time to power down, if you need to. I find a fixed 4 x very usable in woods hunting, have never wanted less power but have wanted more. So if you want a fixed power 4 x works and works well.

IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT GO WITH THE VARIABLE, SOMETIMES YOU NEED MORE THAN 4X AND SOMETIMES YOU NEED LESS THAN 4X. IMHO, 4X AND UP ARE ONLY VIABLE IF YOU HAVE A SOLID REST, e.g. HUNTING FROM A STAND. B&L USED TO MAKE A FIXED 2X WITH A 28mm BELL, AN AWESOME BIG GAME SCOPE FOR FIELD CONDITIONS AND SHOTS USUALLY UNDER 100 YARDS.

For the Encore hands down the 2.5x8, if you were talking revolver that might be a different story.

A 4X is a 4X.... No versatility. 2-8 Leupy is OK to 200. Beyond is 3-12 Burris BPlex.

Thank you for all the replies, fellas. I was leaning towards the vari-power, but the 4x I just had to look at it real hard. . .just never owned/used one. Now if I can locate a Leupold 2.5-8x32 at a good price or even a used one, I'll be in good shape.

What caliber Encore?

Note that the variable has more parts to break under a heavy recoiler. I even broke a Leupold 2X once on a .30-30. I remember at one point JD would not even consider a variable on his .375...

The Variable is also heavier and bulkier. I have used all 3 Leupys: 2X, 4X and Variable. All are good; all have pros and cons.

Just my 2 cents honed by experience.

Gregg
