I bought these Barnes solids a while back as I found them interesting... At the time they were the only game in town for composition solids. The .44 caliber came in 240 and 280grs. I only found the 240`s even though I listed a want ad in the gun newspaper for a couple of months trying to find the 280`s. They were eventually discontinued for fear of their ability to penetrate bullet proof vest`s (that sounds kind of silly- a bullet that can penetrate a "bullet proof" vest)..Anyway.... I see them as a sort of precursor to todays mono metal solids.

You said they were a composition solid, so are they turned brass with a lead core? There used to be a Teflon coated bullet that was discontinued for that same reason.

If they were turned brass with a lead core it would have a place on the bottom where it was filled with lead. Or simply a swaged bullet. But it would not be classified as a composition.
The idea of the composition solid is from a "matrix" with the metal. This was done also with shotgun pellets.

James I do wonder about these bullets? Is the bottom solid also?
on a lighter note,,, They are past the expiration date....Haaa

yeah that is cool.
It is sometimes easy to forget some of the past offerings from bullet or ammo manufacturers.

Interesting that Barnes didn't go back to that style for the buster bullet

James, all handgun bullets sold in the US meets the legal definition of an expanding bullet due to federal law. Copper are considered expanding, the solids that Barnes makes are a copper/zinc and are not considered expanding.
