IN 1988 ON MY FIRST AFRICAN SAFARI, WE SAW SOME SHOOTER KUDU SO I GOT INTO THE CREEDMOOR POSITION WITH MY CONTENDER, FOR WHAT SHUD HAVE BEEN AN EASY SHOT, BUT WHO FORGOT TO CUT THE GRASS? FAVORED IHMSA FREESTYLE POSITIONS DID NOT WORK IN THE FIELD, THAT, PLUS AGING EYES, AND PLUS CENTER OF MASS (GUT SHOT) AIMING POINTS, CONTRIBUTED TO MY EVENTUALLY RETIRING FROM IHMSA COMPETITION.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I have only recently begun to attend IHMSA matches. I think it is some quality trigger time and a useful practice for handgun hunting if approached that way. The people I have met at IHMSA matches have been friendly and helpful. I would encourage anyone interested to attend a match and meet some new folks who are interested in shooting a handgun accurately, even if not for hunting.
My observation on the successful shooters in IHMSA competition currently is that they are using handguns, calibers, and ammo that I would consider below and sometimes well below big game capable. It appears efficiency has replaced horsepower on the ram line.
And I should clarify that my high scores were with a scope. The competitors scoring in Production and Revolver have my respect.

cmnash,

I'm curious, what scope did you use and what hunting positions did you use to shoot that score?

Here is the shooting position I use in Unlimited silhouette. It is close to a position I would use in the field . I often hunt sitting at the base of a tree or rock like one would turkey hunt. Without a back support, my body is more reclined and the gun is lower between my legs at a shooting match than it would be in the field. This position is DOES NOT work with a revolver.
The gun in the image above is my BF 22LR topped with TC 3X scope. I recently topped a 22LR Contender barrel with the same 3X scope. It is the same scope I have on my 35 REM Contender. I use the 22's for Smallbore and Fifth scale competition. This makes it possible to spend quality confidence building trigger time behind the same optic year round.
My 30/30 Super 14 wears a Bushnell 2x-6x Trophy. I have had great results with the three Bushnell Trophies I owned.

Thanks for showing us your shooting position. I can see that working in the field if you hunt from the ground.

Thanks cmnash. At my age, if I tried that position I would need an EMT team to get me out of it.

That position with a big bore revolver will get you a new pair of pants [for the holes you burn and blow in both knees]and powder embedded in both knees.[So says the voice of painful experience.]
