I took the XP-100 in .45-70 Govt out yesterday to do some more testing with the 300 gr Match Solids, but this time on a deer. I have them running 1860 fps from the 13" barrel on top of 50 grains on Reloader 7.
This load has already taken down 2 large boars, but I wanted to see the results on a whitetail. Had a young doe step out at 50 yards and offer a broadside shot. I aimed for the front shoulder to see the effect on bone as well as chest cavity.
The round hit perfect and the doe went about 20 yards and collapsed. Entry hole was small and precise as always with this bullet. The front leg bone was shattered, but the meat was not bloody and "jellied" like is so common the case when shooting a softpoint or hollowpoint. The exit would was larger than I expected, but that could have been from bone exiting as the off side leg bone was also shattered.
The really impressive part was in the chest cavity. The entire chest cavity looked like it had been thrown in a blender. Massive damage which was also evident from the pint or so of blood that had exited the doe's mouth when she fell. The 20 yard blood trail was heavy and solid.
With the amount of cross section and energy produced by this bullet, the match solid performs excellent as a hunting round.
Both boars and now the doe all have had shattered bone, complete pass-thru's, and incinerated chest cavities. So very pleased with the combination of accuracy and devastation that this bullet offers my bolt action .45-70 Govt.

The 45/70 is a sledgehammer in a hunting handgun. Excellent results

I'm impresed, considering it is a pointy non-expanding bullet. I don't think we'd be able to legally use them for hunting here in MN.
