THE 5 INCH MODEL 27 WAS SKEETER'S FAVORITE REVOLVER. MANY YEARS AGO I GOT A GOOD DEAL ON 1 IN A PAWN SHOP, AND HAVE CARRIED IT A LOT BUT HAVE NEVER SHOT ANYTHING BUT SMALL CRITTERS WITH IT. A VERY ACCURATE GUN. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT AN XTRA INCH OF BARREL DOES FOR YOUR SHOOTING.

Skeeter also had a soft spot for the .45 Colt.He was the prime mover in my decision to get my first Ruger in .45 Colt. A decision I have never regretted over the last 40 odd years. Loved his writing and still do!

I'm reminded of one I passed on probably 15yrs ago or more. It was a 5" pre-27 with the beautifully checkered topstrap. Overall, it probably had half its finish worn off and was priced a little higher than I was comfortable with. Sorta made up for it later with this freckled 6" 27-2 and then a 4" Highway Patrolman but always regret not snagging the 5".

You mean Dobe Grant, not Dobie Gray.
Great stuff, James!

45 Man, you may remember Skeeter telling of appearing in Court one day when his coat pulled away as he was passing in front of the Judge to testify, thus revealing his 5" 27. The Judge said "Mr. Sheriff, that is the biggest gun I have ever seen", to resounding laughter.

500WE: I ALSO THOUHT IT WAS DOBIE GRANT, NOT GRAY, A CHARACTER BASED ON COL. EVAN QUIROS, WHO RODE AROUND HIS SOUTH TEXAS RANCH WITH AN 8 3/8ths MODEL 29 ON THE SEAT NEXT TO HIM. ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO SKEETER'S WRITINGS IN SHOOTING TIMES. EVEN IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, SORRY I COULD NOT TELL YOU WHO WRITES IN SHOOTING TIMES TODAY.

Rey, "If I could only have one gun.." was the title for a Dobe Grant article where Skeet asked Dobe what his one gun choice would be.. Dobe`s answerer was a .22 revolver with 6" barrel, a 30-06 rifle with both scope and iron sights, a 12 gauge shotgun with a 28" Modified choke barrel and a 44 mag revolver with a 6" barrel...The article goes back and forth on what and why each gun was chosen when Dobe`s final answer was a .22 rifle, leaving a disgusted Skeeter, knowing this conversation could go on all night...
