Just curious what your favorite bullets for the 35 rem are and what velocities they are being pushed? Im looking at working up some really hot 357 max stuff soon and was hoping to get close to 35 rem velocities. I think its possible with long billet seating and the very moderate pressures that reloading manuals go to.

14? 35 rem....rimmed version with 303 british brass. 180gr hornady single shot ssp @ 2188 fps over the chrony yrs back. Killed several with it. It really does it good lol....n i expect the max will also, even if its a few fps lower.

I have a nice mgm 14? max but havnt finalized my loads yet. Im gonna probably use xtps or rem jhp in it with H110 or some AA1680 i picked up recent. I have enough ssp bullets but......

Look up mike bellms 357max info.

Like KYODE said you can get up to 2150+ from a 35 Remington with out a problem in a G1 Contender with 14" barrel. Probably with H322 powder.

The 357 Maximum with 14 inch barrel and the same 180 grain bullet seated long will go 1850 - 1950 fps. I have broke 2000 fps with 180 XTP's, and H110, but the load was too warm for a G1 Contender in my opinion. I backed my load down to 21.0 grains of H110 and a 180 XTP seated in the lower crimp groove. That is about an 1850 fps load from my pistol. I have a 13" MGM Contender barrel and a CVA Scout rechambered to 357 Maximum. Both are throated to take the 180 XTP's seated in the lower crimp groove. The Scout should take a steady diet of the 1950 fps loads without hurting the gun. I would be a little more cautious with a G1 Contender. The warmer loads may loosen primer pockets a little early also. My initial load development was with Jamerson Brass. I loosened up some primer pockets working up loads. No primer pocket issues with Remington and Starline Brass.

So depending on just how hot you load them, the 35 Remington will go about 200-250 fps faster than a 357 Maximum when both are hand loaded to their maximum potential.

With no 180 SSP bullets, your choices are a little limited on what bullet will perform best at handgun speed. You have the 158 XTP-FP and 180 XTP. Both should work fine, they just shed speed at extended range a little quickly. The 140 FTX will probably be going faster than they need to on impact from the 357 Maximum when pushed to maximum doable velocity. They did not group as well as 180 XTP's in my Scout 357 Max either. I could keep them on a 7" paper plate at 100 yards, but not in a cluster. That leaves the 200 grain FTX. They have a better looking profile than the XTP's. So far I have not tried them in my 35 Bullberry. They are rated to work down to 1800 fps. They have been used with success in a 357 Maximum, but would probably work better going a little faster in a 35 Remington.

180 XTP: Shooting White Tail Deer inside of 150 yards the 180 XTP should work very well in either the 357 Maximum or 35 Remington. With a 150 yard Zero I might try and go a little further with them.

158 XTP-FP: Shooting White Tail Deer inside of 150 yards the 158 XTP-FP should work fine in the 357 Maximum. I would be a little concerned on close shots from a 35 Remington at maximum load speed. Like above I might go a little further with a 150 yard Zero.

200 FTX: Shooting White Tail Deer I would want to keep my shots at 100 yards an under from a 357 Maximum to count on getting any expansion. I would think 200 yard shots with a 35 Remington would get expansion.

Shot placement is everything. You can make killing shots with bullets that do not expand well. Deer are easier to find with a good blood trail from a bullet that expanded, and went completely through however. My shot of choice is a broadside Double Lung Shot that did not touch a shoulder. Less meat loss.

Good luck with your load development.

I can get over 1800 out of a 180 right now without any pressure signs in my 357 mag. Mike bellm is where I got the idea you can push the max that hard. The pressure limit for that head size is 55,000 in a contender g1 or g2 doesn't matter cause both are fine with 223. I have an accurate arms manual showing contender loads with the 200 FTX hitting 1840 at on 35,000 psi so id hazard a guess I can bump that to over 2000... Its looking like the FTX will expand good at 200 yards in the 35 rem and it should only be going about 1600 then... Guess ill just have to play with it it shoots the 200 FTX really well the way it sits they just won't expand at 50 yards

Hornady 180 Gr SSPB

#2 Speer Hot Core 180 Gr
both shoot very well in both of my guns.

If you go with the Speer you can also shoot it in a lever gun if you want to standardize..

Speers do quite well I have used them in both the 35 Rem and the 356 Win.

I should take a look at the 180 Speers in my 35 BullBerry. I killed a lot of deer with them in a 35 Whelen Rifle years ago. It put them down like being hit by lightning.

BushytailBasher If you are seating your bullets barely in the case on a 357 Magnum, you may not gain a lot with the switch to 357 Maximum Brass. I have been switching back and forth between 357 Maximum, and 360 Dan Wesson Brass. I can get about the same speed with either case long seated.

My reason for working with 360 Dan Wesson was that last Fall Jamerson was the only choice in 357 Maximum Cases. I was not impressed with them at all, and ordered 500 of the 360 DW cases from Starline after reading the same information on long seating 357 Magnum Cases that you did. This was before Starline started making 357 Maximum brass. With 500 of the 360 DW cases I plan to wear them out loading them. Or giving it a good try.

I can only get to the 2nd cannelure on a 180 xtp if I try to go any further it opens and closes hard... Unfortunatly its not because I hit the lands its wedding in that stupid cone in front of the chamber... So im barely at 360 DW oal.. So I should still have a good bit to gain.. I think my pal is 1.720 right now and I should be able to go 1.9 at the very least after opening it up

I also just noticed I got an email back from hornady and they are saying minimum velocity for expansion on the 200 FTX is around 1500 fps
