I run the leupold 2.5-8 pistol scope on a 30-30 and 17HMR and most recently 223 and don't notice the eye relief changing much from 5x to 8x. I've been happy with the scopes, but I am exploring red-dots for larger game at ranges under ~150 yard to improve target acquisition time.

Normally when on the higher power on my 2.5 - 7 Burris scopes I am shooting supported off Bags or Bipod, and I am choked up closer to the scope. When shooting off hand, I am on low power, and the eye relief is just fine. I have never found the changing eye relief to be a big problem for my shooting style.

Same here with all variable LER scopes whether Leupold, Burris, T/C or Bushnell 3200s. May not have to choke up as much with higher magnification on some but do to some degree no matter what brand.
