Ive had very little experience with the long eye relief scopes but I got a Burris 2x7 for an encore pistol barrel and mounted it and sighted in.I took the scope off that barrel and today mounted it back on in the same position but the eye relief seems to be about 8 to 10 inches only on 7 power at arms length no focus.I tightened it down pretty stout wonder if I messed it up,it did shot my pet load into 3/4 inch at 100 but the others were untried loads and they shot poorly I couldn't tell if it was the scope or the loads but the eye relief definetly changed on 7x from 5x down it was normal.

Yes the eye relief will change as you go up in power. You are right it starts to become more notable above 5X. Not a big problem but it is irritating. Eye position gets more critical also.

I had only used the Ultradot 30s on my revolvers the magnification is real nice with the scopes but will take some time getting use to .I thought maybe I had messed it up tightening the rings.

The same thing happens with my Nikon variables. On 2.5x power, you could hold it at arm's length, but once you dial it up to 8x you'll need to have it almost half that distance to you.

The Weaver 2.5-8 is a good scope. Eye relief stays aroun the same for all powers.

I had a 3-12 Burris on an unbraked 338 federal. It was "different" touching off a round with a scope 10" from your head. Not for me.

Burris are the worst for changing eye relief but they are a good choice for a single shot. If you want to take advantage of higher powers go with the 3x12. It's very usable up to 9 or 10x above that it gets very critical. Still usable but it is more difficult. At lower powers 3-7 its very good. And by the way, if you adjust the focus ring it will affect the eye relief as well as the focus.

Here is a reference article I wrote a few years ago. Much of it is still applicable.

The Bushnell 2-6X is probably the very best for maintaining close to the same eye relief throughout the power range.

I would agree the Elite 3200 is a great scope but I find the crosshairs to be a little thin for my liking, but it's a very good scope.

That was a great article and the rest of the posts would have sure been helpful, I should have asked about them first but for hunting I don't think I would use more than 4x or 5 I'm looking forward to getting use to it that's what makes it fun.
