So many good ideas. I will end up digging this one up when I am seriously looking into a hunt or two.
Gary that sounds like a blast. hope it's a good trip for you. I will be curious to hear how it goes.
Rod, I think a Roosevelt hunt would be pretty sweet. You are right, not a lot of people can say they have hunted Roosevelts.

This is a fascinating thread for me as it addresses my situation as well. I would love to hunt black bear in the spring, however handgun opportunities are limited on the east coast.

But not in the fall. There are plenty of places to hunt black bear with a handgun on the East coast. I'm not sure I am following you.

Just received an e-mail from the Y O Ranch detailing their February Red Stag "extra special" hunt. A stag & and a hind for $2950.
While this past year was very dry in South Texas, they have had some fall & winter moisture. The antlers may not be as good as in a better year but the animals should be in decent shape at this time. I expect that the ranch is trying to reduce the numbers of animals somewhat to compensate for the drought.
Special ends on Feb 29. If I could get away this month, I would go. That is a heck of a bargain IMHO.

Don't overlook the good old Whitetail!! My favorite game animal. Don't know about success rates over there, but in the midwest, there is lots of great public hunting land, and you can do a lot of pre-scouting from a map, and google earth.
Or, if you want to spend the $$$, there are outfitters all over. I think a trophy whitetail would cost a lot though.

I talked with an outfitter from Price,Utah last week. He specializes in hog hunts at a reasonable price. You don't even need an out of state hunting license. I guess it's on private land. There are probably deals like this all over the "lower 48".

The fall is already extremely busy for me...got deer and grouse to pursue. I was largely interested in spring hunts because I didn't want to be sitting inside when it's so nice outside :-) I'd like to hunt something in the Spring. Boars are on the menu, but a spring bear hunt would be great too :-)

I really appreciate all of the replies. It has given me a lot of food for thought. In addition I am thinking about what I could do with my Dad. We have talked about going on some kind of hunt this year but I have to realize that he has some physical limitations.
I have handgun hunted whitetails but here in New England. As a rule the success rate for deer hunting in New England is around 10 percent. We just don't have the high population numbers like the Deep South and the Midwest.
I want to talk to Dad about Wyoming antelope. I know for a fact that he'd use a rifle but I would use my handguns. Most likely it would be an Encore with the 15" 30-06 barrel. But I have to chat with Dad.
