I am looking to getting into handgun hunting (for deer mostly), for cartirdges I was thinking either .357mag, .45 Long Colt, or .44mag. Now out of those rounds what one would you recomend? (I have shot some .45acp and a few .357mags in my day, so I am not experieanced). Would the recoil of the .44mag be to much for me to be accurate with? I am kinda thinking about getting a Ruger Blackhawk or SBH. Any other cartridge or pistol recomendations?

Oh and I am new to the forum and look forward to learning about pistol hunting. I am mostly an archery hunter so I am used to knowing my lethal range and keeping my shots well within that range. And I believe handgun hunting will present a whole new set of challenges. Thank you.

Hello and welcome, you will get all kinds of very useful info here.I see you are interested in the single actions, the 45 or the 44 are both good choices, ammo for the 44 will be easier to find. Practice a lot and have fun.

Welcome aboard. Do you load your own ammunition?

No I dont. Wish I did though. I have been mostly an archery guy my whole life so I have never had the need to reload. Maybe in a few years I will start reloading. But who knows.

If you do not reload, I would suggest a 44 Magnum just for the sake of ammo. You can shoot 44 specials in it for reduced loads and still kill a deer. The .357 is a nice chambering but not enough snuff for larger game animals, and the 45LC just doesn't get its due from the ammo makers, so if you can only have one.......get a 44.

I hate saying that...... ;-)

Welcome to the site, you might consider a SBHH in 44 mag,if you desire to use an optic at some time they come with rings.

if you were an archery guy like i was forever:) i choose the .357 because i only take archery type shots and im very consistent with the .357. i just started handloading and its a WHOLE lot of fun. i killed a buck this year with my gp100 and was very pleased with the results.....BUT if you find you can shoot the 44 well, by all means go for it. im just a 357 fan, esp. since i only hunt coyotes, deer, turkey, and small feral hogs( im a meat hunter)

In that case I recommend the 357 mag until your are more experienced and then move up
