You cannot carry concealed with a sportsman permit, it is only good for hunting, fishing, trapping and dog training, your handgun has to be visible, I obtained the ccw license for when I'm down there scouting and riding.

One exception to needing a hunting license that I know of is Wyoming for coyotes.

Or for prairie dogs and other varmints.

Racksmasher,

Most states that I've hunted do not require you to have a Handgun license to openly carry or to use during the general firearms season, provided handguns are legal during that time. I know your home state of NY and certain states areas in the NE are an exception to my findings and experience however.

Most of the previous posters were speaking to CCW and reciprocity, not general use. What out-of-state locales were you interested in?

That is good info and good to know, I am one of the chosen few to live in this gun friendly state, my future hunts will be in Texas, Wyoming, back to Ohio, and a hog hunt somewhere, for these states I am covered, thank you all for the info.

I'm seeing some confusion here, are you speaking to transportation, hunting, or concealed carry. This post has gone so many directions my head is spinning. You'll find in the west with the exception of california things are more laid back than the east and even the south. If your talking hunting requirements it's best to check with your intended states dept of fish and wildlife, transportation I recommend the NRA's book on gun laws for the 50 states, it covers both transportation requirements and concealed carry requirements as well as reciprocity of ccw's.

Any reciprocity or ccw travel questions; go to concealcarry.net. If your have hunting questions; go to the LINKS tab on this website. These two spots should be able to answer any of your questions dealing with the subjects.

VERY good advice. When I traveled to Maine to hunt this past fall, I thought I had done my homework by checking the handgun laws in Maine. What I failed to do, was check the transportation laws for every state I was traveling through. I "thought" that all would be like Missouri, and if you are "traveling peacefully through" the state there was not a problem. That was NOT true. Be sure and plan your route and check the laws for each state you will be in.
