A short time ago Dad and I attended a predator hunting seminar at the Bass Pro Shops near Gillette Stadium( that is where one set of millionaires chases a large double ended deer slug to the other set of millionaires on this big grassy field that probably would be better served as wildlife habitat).

I learned a lot and I will admit that the man is a good salesman. I bought a electronic caller. A basic Foxpro Spitfire. It is made right here in the US of A( the made in China, etc gets old after a while) and is remotely controlled.

I ordered it preloaded with twenty four sounds that would work best in my area including a couple of black bear sounds. Here in good ole Massachusetts you can use an electronic caller for black bear. So for five bucks I plan to go to the Berkshires and try my luck with the e caller and Ruger .480 Super Redhawk next September if all goes well.

This weekend I plan to take off in the morning and see what I can do with this new toy.

I also had an evil thought. I was thinking of putting the e caller in either the hamper or the clothes closet when my wife was upstairs. Turn on the sqeaking vole sound and see what happens.

I've hunted with a few Fox Pro's....they are nice! Met an old friend for dinner one night, turns out he helped test for Fox Pro when they were making some new models. Well that evening he had a new one with him....in the restaurant....with a remote control.....and loaded with a chicken sound. He set it down in a booth behind us as he walked in.

About 20 minutes after arriving he turned it on and started messing with the sounds, mainly the chicken with the volume low. Good thing the place was about empty....the people were looking around, waiters were walking around puzzled. Anytime someone headed toward the caller he would turn the volume off. It was hilarious.

I bought the Spitfire a few months ago and have taken it out some this fall. It is light weight and has alot of range on the remote. My only complaint is that it doesnt have enough volume. I hunt central and northwest Arkansas and the woods and hills get pretty dense and make is so that if your not right on top of the song dogs then they wont hear you. In open cow pastures it works pretty good but in the deep woods not so well. About a week ago I bought the external speaker to inhance the volume but I have not field tested it yet. Sounds good in the yard though. As far as the sounds go they are great. They use (if I understand right) real animal recordings. If you want more sounds you can go to their website and download them and re-upload the to your unit and I think it will hold up to 100 if Im remembering right. For the money its a really good electronic rig. I still take the mouth calls just in case something happens to the caller. Bobcats and coyotes give me a reason to still load 357.

Bigbore, i know a guy who swears that crow calls will aid in calling in a bear. He has a few stories of having crows fight over food and having a bear show up to feed on a dead carcass. Can't say I have tried it, but might be worth a shot. Certainly don't think it would scare them away.

I have a Fox-Pro Fx-5. My favorite sound to mess with people is mountain lion in heat. I also loaded taps on it and I remove my cap an play any time I kill a coyote.

I just get blamed for everything anyway, might just as well do something to deserve it.
