new toy

.458 #1. I can't shoot handguns all the time......
It's a blast to shoot. fairly mild compared to some of my other boomers.

That looks like fun! A Ruger No 1 is high on my wish list should I win the lottery.

Re: new toy

I love a No. 1, beautiful rifles. All of them don?t shoot as good as they look, but I had two that did. Still have one of them, a 25-06 with the heavy barrel. It wouldn?t group well with any factory ammo so I worked up a load for it and now it?s a literal one-holer at 100 yards. I had a .280 Rem that was a two moa gun, but the .300 Win was a shooter with Hornady Heavy Magnums. I killed one Montana muley with it and never shot it again, so I let it go down the road. Good memories !

Re: new toy

I have ran into a few that weren't great shooters. I can attest that all of the current crop that have bore sizes starting with .4 will shoot. The 45/70 shoots .5" groups with several loads. The .405 also shoots sub MOA. The .416 Rigby loaded from mild to wild shoots sub MOA and the .458 did for its previous owner. I am going to switch scopes before shooting for tiny groups. I had a gorgeous "Emperor grade" 7x57 international that had a grossly oversize chamber. It shot terrible but was easily one of the most beautiful rifles I have ever seen.

Left to right .458, 405 and 45-70. Not shown is the other 40 bore, the .416 Rigby.

I had one in .475 Linebaugh and it also was an accurate shooter.

Re: new toy

Nice big bores with nice wood. I have Ruger's 50th anniversary 45/70 No 1 and the 50th anniversary of the No 1 in 308. The 45/70 puts 3 in a single cluster at 100 yards. The 308 has been more picky, but I have found a few loads that keep it just over an inch.

WHEN I WAS LAST A RIFLE HUNTER (1985) MY DEER RIFLE FOR YEARS HAD BEEN A No. 1B IN 270. PASSED IT ON TO A SON, HAS BEEN HIS HOG AND DEER RIFLE FOR ABOUT 15 - 20 YEARS NOW, STILL WEARING A 40 OR SO YEAR OLD REDFIELD SCOPE.

Used to have one in .223 with a bull barrel, man it was a tack driver. Always wanted one in 45-70.

that 45/70 with its pet load will shoot groups in the .2s.
It will shoot nearly anything .5" My brother in law bought one on the same day and it shoots the same way.

My son-in-law has a full stock chambered in .270, been trying to get him to part with it for years.
